RE: [SurfGuitar101] Dick Dale Strings

Jim Lavery - 30 Sep 2002 12:12:14

I believe he uses Cryogenic type, blue steel from Markley.
Which I used be before him.
I use .13 .15 .18 not wound, .32 .42 .52
A custom set I made by ordering a dozen of each size.
In these sizes they all seem about the same tightness when bending them.
Dick uses a .60 isn't it?

Subject: [SurfGuitar101] Dick Dale Strings
Hi, I'm new to this group and I was wondering if Dick Dale plays
round wound or flat wound since Dean Markly, the people who sponser
him, don't sell flat wound strings.
I was also wondering if anyone can tell me if its possible to put
the same guage of strings as Dick Dale used to play on my guitar, but
right side up. According to his web site he used 16p, 18p, 20p, 39w,
49w, and 60w strings. I play a japan reissue jaguar with 13-54 flat
wounds right now. I know the vibrato will be unusable with the new
strings. Also I know I will need to tweek the truss rod a little but
I don't know if it can stand that much tension if the heavier strings
are put on. Also it looks like I'll need to need to file the holes
where the heaviers stings go thru larger on the tailpeice. If anyone
knows if this will warp the neck or do some other permanent to the
guitar please tell me. Any information would be appreciated.
