Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: DD Q & A, shit that went down on Sat at Jim Pash benefit

bruce d (wizzbangg2003) - 18 Apr 2005 21:20:17

Sorry, but I'll analogize by slipping other band's names in place of Dick Dale:
Despite clamorous requests, if we were on stage before:
The Ventures - we would refuse requests to play Walk Don't Run;
The Lively Ones - we would refuse requests to play High Tide/Tranquilizer
The Surfaris - we would refuse requests to play Wipe Out
The Chantays - we would refuse requests to play Pipeline
etc. etc. etc.
Respect is a sadly rare commodity these days, and as far as I'm concerned, Dick
Dale has earned enough of my respect that I would have answered the audience
requests, (had I been Dave Wronski) by saying that out of respect and homage to
"The King of Surf Guitar" we would refrain from playing his signature song,
knowing it would be inevitably part of his set!
Seems all too obvious to me, but I'm a traditionalist, steeped in respect for
those who went before, and who helped design and define this wonderful genre of
Surf Music. I guess my ethics are inconveniently old-fashioned for some of
y'all!

Except the fans demanded Slacktone play Misirlou because they enjoy it

invent the style that Slacktone plays? To be honest, I've never heard
a full song of their's, only the sound bytes on their site, and it
sounds awesome, but if they were around in the late 50's and early
60's, do you think that they would have been playing stuff like their
version of Miserlou without Dick's influence?

thing that a headliner needs to hear before going on is the opening
act playing one of the headliners songs, whether it's a better version
or not. I checked out Slacktone's Miserlou video on their site and
apart from the open-string stuff intro, IMHO it's pretty much Dick's
version, not exactly, but close enough. Even the glissandos seem to be
in the same spots as Dick's version.

influence, I think he's allowed to have an ego and attitude. Anyway,
that's my take on it. I don't personally know Dick or Dave so I can
only speculate.
