From lurking about on the Fender Forum, I think I can answer some of these.

Yes.

No it started after CBS took over....66 sounds right.

The Jaguar lead pot knobs were always black, but they had indentations in
the sides of them for gripping. Its hard to tell but the ones in the photos
look smooth.

Yes. Black guitars were somewhat rare, and Fender didn't want to make
special gold decals for each line. So they ended up just saying "Fender" on
them and were used on all black guitars.
