Thanks for the input everyone. My cable has been down for a day and a
half, so I only got the initial reply, but the steel wool worked great
(and yes, I used masking tape :-). I didn't realize how corroded the
frets were until after I started working on them. I must be blessed
with un-sweaty hands because I've never had this happen on any of my
guitars...and I'm sure I don't wipe the fretboard down as much as I should
