My pickups are so far from the strings. I shim my neck and like my
action high so there is one hell of a gap. I don't like how Fender
strings are so close to the pickguard due to lack of neck angle. I am
not too worried about the pickups being so far from the strings volume
wise. I play through a Showman and the lead guitarist plays through
either a Tremolux or Bandmaster.
