I use the Dan Ware methodology: I set them so there is about the
thickness of a #2 pencil between the pickups and strings. Actually
mine might be a bit higher than that. But it's in the ball park. I
then usually raise the treble side and lower bass side in order to
even out the volume between strings. Just use your ears. You don't
want to get the pickups too close or their magnetic pull will start to
affect the string vibrations.
