I'm not a "Bass Guy" (I used to be the bass player in a couple of
"sloppy rock" bands back in the 80's & 90's but I would never call
myself a Bassist.) That said the stock pickups in the SX basses I have
sound fine to me. I haven't felt a need to replace them, and I would
if I did (see below.)
The pickups that Rondo's guitars come with can be hit or miss. But
they are so inexpensive and well made otherwise that they make great
starting points for "project guitars" if you can get past the dumb
logos and ill shaped headstocks. I have several other guitars from
Rondo...
Agile 2500 Les Paul Gold Top style - Great sounding P-90s
(My niece has an Agile SG style with P-90s too, really nice guitar)
Agile IJ Cool Cat (Gretsch-ie looking semi hollow) Replaced the stock
"PAF" pickups with GFS "Liverpool" Filtertron-ish pickups a few days
ago. (This guitar was an amazing buy for $199. It may replace my Burns
Bison as my main guitar with a few more tweaks...)
SX STL50 Telecaster style - no complaints on the pickups in this one
SX SST57 Strat style - replaced stock pickups with GFS "Vintage AlNiCo
Stagger" sounds much more Buddy Holly/Richie Valens now.
I've had several Epiphones/Squires/Mexi-Fenders in the past and the
stuff from Rondo is as good or better.
I've got real Fenders, Guilds and weird vintage stuff too but keep
finding myself picking up my modern "Cheap Crap" guitars to play/gig
with because they sound very good and I don't have to worry about
hurting them (much.) I truly believe this is the "Golden Age of Cheap
Guitars."
