When I needed a bass for a recording once, I walked up to my local music store
and picked up a Squire P-Bass Special. It was very close to 200 clams. It is an
excellent bass in terms of finish, neck, frets, action and it's nice and light.
I even like the stock pick-ups but I recommend flatwound strings as it's too
bright with roundwounds.
