hey man, I'm from the 70's, gimme break!
silverfaces are decent - and very modable. even the UL's can be made
to sound okay - but nothing better - the older ones are better, and
easaly blackfacable. that's the problem; you see a silverface, and
you don't have clue what it is: anything can be inside, from '63
schematic 'til a '79 schematic - huge difference!
claiming a ss ampeg is an ampeg is like claiming a fender sidekick is
a fender haha. A friend of mine has a 65 watt solid state bass
sidekick. Just last week i referred to him as "the guy who does not
own an amp." - he never uses it too, always borrows one of mine, and
is currently looking for a real amp. there you go.
another former bassist had the 300RMS SVT with 8X10 - sounded great
if you set it way too loud. at normal volume, i'd prefer pushing a
100w fender, pushed tubes just sound a lot abetter, imho. matter of
tatse probably, and of how much you really need.
