Charlie,
You are right, there is a vast range of technology and more
importantly, end user experience levels. I think the best thing you
can do is try out your clips on as many configurations of hardware /
software as you have available, and ask a few people to preview the
clips privately first. If that looks okay, release them to the world.
It looks like you did all that, so I say go for it.
The video clips we have on the SG101 site are also made with a still
photo digital camera, that just oh by the way happens to take movies
if you ask it really nice. Ours doesn't have a time limit however. We
took ours in black and white mainly to save space on the camera's
flash memory...also color doesn't turn out too good anyway in a dark
bar or club. I had to severley compress the quicktime clips to get
them on the web page...as a result, the quality suffers. It's a big
hassle of compromises and doing what you can on a limited budget.
Obviously I would have preferred to own a high-tech digital movie
camera, but those are a little pricey......
Someday technology will catch up and we'll be able to share full color
hour long concerts with each other over the super duper hyper
internet....
I'll repeat my offer that I make periodically...if anyone wants the
larger uncompressed versions of the movies I have on the site...email
me off list. Send me a blank CD and a buck or two for postage and I'll
burn you a copy. Don't expect a huge difference, it's not like they
will be in color or any bigger on screen, but a lot of the murkiness
goes away. The sound is about the same though.
I've also tried to burn the quicktime clips onto a DVD, but the
software I currently have for doing that is failing me miserably. I
eventually hope to buy some better software. That may be the most
convenient format to give to people.
Thanks again Charlie,
BN
