I just picked up the new Alesis Playmate - Guitarist CD Player. It's a
stand alone headphone amp combined with CD player. The cool thing is
that it allows you to independently adjust the pitch and tempo, and it
also allows you to create a loop. If I'm trying to learn an
exceptionally fast guitar part, I cut it out and loop it, and slow it
down 50%, figure it out, and slowly increase the tempo, until I'm
playing it like the original. I'm using my ear, just getting a little
extra help.
The built in sounds are mediocre, but with a little fiddling, you can
get a fair tone, enough to practice with. You could do this on a
computer too, but it's nice having knobs to turn, instead of all the
effort to load and adjust with software.
