Re: [SurfGuitar101] Jag set-up, strings, reverb......

Marty Tippens (mctippens) - 20 Feb 2005 00:11:47

That about covers it, Chris. I've also had no probs with my RI tank for at least
three years now. It's completely stock. I have to wonder if those who have
problems with their tanks experience such probs as a result of tinkerin' with
'em.
Anyways, to keep from gettin' sniped, I proxy bid to a high enough level such
that I would be relieved if I got beat out. As you bid, you have to ask yourself
if you would be okay being beat out by a dollar. Of course one can also use a
snipe service for a fee but you still have to give them a bid and if someone has
a high proxy, the snipe will be too late. A Ventures quad live '71 album went
today for better than 120 clams. I'm glad I didn't win!
I hope "Pray for Surf" wasn't too religious for ya! Someone actually told me
they stayed away from that album 'cause they thought it was gospel oriented.
Yes, PJ got heavy handed with some titles on later albums but "Pray for Surf"
was religious only in the album title.

First of all, I'm glad Bill is sober! Second - his set up tips for
a jag are spot on. my AV Jag came with 1/8" shim ( at least), I
left 'em all in there, and have heavy 12-53 strings. No buzz. I
think especially with the Jags short scale, Heavy strings are the
way to go.
When I pulled the guitar apart, I found the date it was assembled
was 10/31/03 - Halloween, and the assembly guy drew a jack-o-
lantern on the neck pocket! How cool is that?! I'd have taken a
photo, but my digital camera wasn't around.
I got sniped on a D.D. album (summer surf) today, by $1! What a
jip!!!
Marty is right, crank that truss rod, don't be scared. I found it
very helpful to get a really straight ruler or straightedge that is
over 12" long, preferably metal. when you start a set up, make the
neck perfectly flat to start with. Looking at it with your eye
isn't accurate enough. I've never run into a neck that wasn't
fixable with less than a full turn of the rod.
I still love Thomastik Infeld Flats.... Also, Ivans tip on
Rotosound round wound strings was the greatest. THE BEST round
wound strings I have ever used. Thanks Ivan!
My Reissue Reverb tank is working flawlessly, and I kick it at
least twice a week for the effect. perhaps treating 'em bad is the
way to go.
Did I cover all of it Marty? Ha!
Chris
P.S. I got a copy of the Packards Pray for surf.... Pretty cool!
