Re: Interview with Phantom Frank from The Treble Spankers

Ronald E Smith (litnemo) - 04 Feb 2005 03:06:16

Thanks Brian,
>>Phantom Frank disbanded the Treble Spankers due to an RSI type injury.
>>He's doing music again and here is his site:
Frank's new band "Phantom Four" sounds very promising.........
The Phantom Four is playing mostly new, selfwritten
material: Spanish, Middle Eastern, Gypsy and a few
songs inspired by British New Wave and Punk from the
80's. Very interesting when combined with surfguitar.
We do some covers: Margaya, Malaguena, Johnny Guitar,
Pintor and some Link Wray songs.
>>His new stuff has a lot of weird influences like electronica and other
>>stuff, but regardless, the Treble Spankers are rapidly becoming one
>>of my favorite bands.
I just received, and have been listening to, Dead Man Surfin' (Franks
solo CD)
It definitely has some surf influence because there are songs
like..........
Dead Man Surfin', The Lost Surfer,
Condition Black , Shockwave Etc.
This CD is Frank playing various instruments (mostly Lapsteel)
with a tape. This CD showcases Franks unique song writing skill
and multiple guitar styles. All very impressive IMHO. The Indian,
Middle Eastern, Polynesian and Psychedelic Rock influence is abundant.
To be fair I will categorize his music (Solo) somewhere between
Friends of Dean Martinez and the Blue Hawaiians.
The songwriting is all over the World map. Absolutely beautiful melodies
are mixed in with these exotic styles. I do not know exactly how long he
has been playing Lapsteel but he plays it beautifully.
The CD is available in the Netherlands from "Surfin's back again"
(which means you double the shipping and lose a few bucks converting to
Euros)
>>I found this interview very interesting...it's got lots of good Treble
>>Spankers and gear info. Art from MuSick did the interview
This is the first time I saw that interview! Very informative.
BTW, The Phantom Four is playing in May (Netherlands)with the Infrareds
and Tiki Tiki Bambooooz.
Anyone want to go?
