For once I'm with Marty on this one. Surf music is easy to learn by
ear, learning this way improves your musical skills in other areas
as well. For example, I've become much better at my vocal
harmonizing skills since I've started disecting surf tunes. But, if
you become dependent on reading tabs, you never fully understand
what you are playing. Sometimes when players learn by tab they
leave out notes, because they don't think they need to play them,
this is because the song actually sounds right when they play the
tab. Reason for this is, when you don't learn it by ear you don't
sit there like a monkey playing the same parts over and over until
you get it exact. Plus a majority of the surf tabs I've seen are
really off.
Finally, it feels good to have figured something out without using a
tab.
