Hey Bay Area guitar players, we're looking for a 2nd guitarist to join up with us as Dr. Kilometers recently made his exit from the band. If you've been on this forum for any length of time you know who we are and what we do - though we are looking towards moving in some new directions too.
What we'd like in a guitar player is someone already capable of playing leads, as I plan on switching off and on organ much like Laika and The Cosmonauts do. Also very important is the ability to play fast downstroke chords on some of the rhythm guitar parts (e.g. the Ramones or most any punk band). This is not as easy as it seems and usually takes more than a few months effort to build stamina.
Owning proper gear is preferable though we have enough to get you going until you buy your own. A pleasant light hearted demeanor is also preferable.
We have a CD coming out soon that we're recording right now, and would like to start playing out to promote it, so we're anxious to get a replacement soon.
Email me with any further questions or if you want to set up an audition.
Thanks,
Danny
PS Practices are weekly in Oakland near downtown.

Hah, If I could play like Ryan, Shigeo or Wronski I'd consider it. Alas I make up for poor technique but cramming in as much music as possible into an arrangement. Plus our bassist prefers to lay down a simple foundation for the song, which actually leaves the room for another guitar. I wouldn't even mind a 5 piece if the right people come along.

That's very kind of you to say Danny. Thank you. However, I would disagree with you about your poor technique remark. C'mon man! Are you kidding me? Chronosurf is one of the best modern surf songs written. Nothing wrong with your technique. If you really wanted to make the TMen a 3-piece you could. No problem. I'm not advocating you go that way, I'm just saying you could if that's what you wanted.
Good luck on finding another guitar player. Its always tough finding the right people to play with.

Danny...don't sell yourself short. There aren't many guys that can play like Ryan, Wronski, Ivan, etc. Some of your tunes may sound better than you expect. Then again, two guitars do sound good!!!
Good luck either way!

Danny's music is pretty dense, and there is a lot of rhythmic and harmonic interplay, he'd have to be a bipolar octopus to pull of the fingerings. I am honored to be subbing with the Tomorrowmen for a few shows this fall and am learning their set, let's just say this isn't music for beginners.
Playing with two guitarists is a choice, not something you leave behind once you become able to play solo. It's one of the great debates of surf music, but there are many people who prefer quartets to trios.

Honestly, if Danny considers himself a mediocre player, then there is really no chance for me to achieve mediocrity. Anyway, my completely useless $0.02- I kinda think a guitar-dominated genre like surf requires at least one guitar at all times. If he said the bass player were occasionally doing keys, a trio would totally work (perhaps with a bass pedal)... but I'm trying to imagine Telstar without guitar, and it really isn't sounding too good.

I can't summon enough brain cells to think of a better example right now.

Good thing they wouldn't be playing Telstar, nor is that even a decent argument again having a song with keyboard/bass/drums.

That's because you killed them off trying to envision Telstar.

Thanks Ferenc, it's true I just prefer more instruments, like I said above I may be tempted to go 5 piece with the right players. However it is I who am honored to have the great Ferocious Doberman subbing for us.

Thanks Ryan, but songwriting is a completely different skill than guitar playing. Maybe I know just enough about playing guitar to see how much better you and the others I mentioned are. It's the privilege of the songwriter to write to his own strengths. I'm really hoping to find a better player than myself, it's really the best way to learn.
