Hey everyone,
I'm looking for opinions on your favorite Eminence speakers. I think I'm going to go with Eminence speakers for my El Sonido. I'd like to use this rig for playing surf, naturally. I've been looking at the Legends and the Swamp Thangs, and I'm open to any input anyone has about them, or other Eminence Speakers.
Thanks in advance,
Lime
Oh, by the way,
These will be in a 2x12 configuration

the name is impressive as a word, but over the past 40+ years, I have found them to be not so good sounding. I would highly recommend you get Weber VST speakers. You can get two 12's voiced just like original Jensens (called 'Chicago')
Best of luck.

All I can add to this is that I just got some Texas Heat speakers and I am a big fan of them, of course these are in an amp I never played with any other speaker so I can't really compare them to anything else.
I just did a couple quick searches on the board and...
Ivan likes the Swamp Thangs
Zak, who is out of the week otherwise he would respond here, likes the Legends. Zak actually told me to buy the Texas Heat speakers for my amp. Better suited to that amp than the Legends.
Can you do a cab that is one 15" and one 12"? That would be very cool. I eventually plan on doing that for my new amp.

I have a pair of Weber 12" Calis in one cab, and a pair of Legend 151 15" speakers in another cab... I would buy the Legends over and over again. I think they are great speakers. I very seriously considered doing the Commonwealth 15s but they were a little more expensive, and the impedence wasn't going work.
Anyway, for my money: Legends. Great balance of price and sound.

I like the Webers just fine, but I'm not blown away by them at all. Being that I got the Legends right away (3 days-ish shipping), where the Webers took a month+, and the fact that the Webers were more money for less speaker, I say again: I'd go Legends.

The Swamp Thang has been getting good reviews.
I like the Commonwealth 15, FWIW.

I bought a 2x12 Bandmaster cabinet last year that came loaded with Eminence Patriot Screamin' Eagles. I bought the cabinet just for the cabinet, figuring I'd upgrade the speakers, but figured I'd try the Sceamin' Eagles anyway. As soon as I hit the first few notes, I knew these speakers were great. The sound I've been looking for for years was right there.
That seems to be how I discover things, falling ass backwards into it.
Still really like the speakers BTW.

Which is really the best way to discover something. That way you can't have built anything in your mind about how great they are going to be only to be disappointed.

I agree. Thanks for all of the help and opinions, guys. I think I'm leaning towards the Legends as of this moment.
I still have a bit of time before I order anything, so I'll wait for some more opinions in the meantime.
Thanks again everyone.

I recently bought a pair of the Legends but have not had the chance to really try them out yet. I also have a pair of the 10" Ragin' Cajuns in my Vibroverb and absolutely love those.

I have a pair of 12" Black Powder's in my Pro Reverb that sound very nice. Of course the only thing I have to compare em to is the 40 some odd year old Utah's that the amp came with. I have heard much positive about the Texas Heat speakers.

Cannabis Rex (with a Weber Cali) in an old magnatone type 2x12. outstandiing tone. CRex in an old Gibson GA40, again, outstanding.
Big Ben 15" in two amps. Great speaker. Legend 151 in another. Same deal.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I had a question for Jake or anyone else for that matter. I have decided not to get the Swamp Thang, I haven't been crazy about the demos I have heard. I was curious about the 12" Texas heat for my 1x12 Bandmaster cabinet.
Jake, do you still like the Texas Heat? I can order it stock in 4 ohms vs having to wait a month for another model to be custom made into 4 ohms. I would really appreciate any suggestions or recommendations for my cab. Also, feel free to recommend a different brand if you like. I am not committed to Eminence.

Most of my experience with Eminence speakers is with the bass versions but I recently acquired a blackface Vibrolux Reverb from a friend that came with a pair of Legends installed.
It sounds magnificent. Still very Fender-y but the tone is great and it has a ton of headroom for a 35W amp.

Thanks, WoodyJ. I am definitely considering the Legends. They don't offer a 4 ohm version so I would have to wait a month or so to have one custom made. The Texas Heat sounded pretty good in the demos and they offer it in a 4 ohm version. I noticed Jake liked them, but that was almost nine years ago!

I've got a little 20 watt Epiphone amp that I put a Texas heat in. I was a little hesitant because the name reminds me of SRV and ZZ top tones.
Really sounds great for cleans despite the name.

For what it's worth I'd like to throw out that no one I've spoken with has ever had a negative thing to say about any Eminence speaker. Maybe I don't know many people. All the ones I've had and played through have been a big improvement over whatever they were replacing. I like to nerd out about speakers as much as the next guy, but I think any one you pick would be a winner. Since the Texas Heat is readily available in 4 ohm I'd take that plunge. If you wanna wait to get a Legend in 4 ohm, then you'll probably be happy with that too.

I have an Eminence Red Coat Private Jack 12" in my DeLisle Nickelbox Combo. Now that it's broken in, sounds real good to me. Nice balanced sound with a definite British flavor similar to a Celestion Vintage 30 but doesn't break up as quickly as a Vintage 30 which is a good thing in my 5 watt DeLisle.
