so im going to start building up a strat to replace the one that got stolen. the one thing i dont like about strats is that the tremolo arm is either too floppy or too stiff (modern 2 point, i dont like the vinage trems) so i just loosened the trem springs so that i jacked it up out of the body and i would just grab the trem and pull or push to use it. although i really like the way it played, i was frusterated with the fact that i couldnt use the trem while picking. im proboly going to get a body from warmoth since you cant get a 2 point trem strat in surf green, daphne blue, or any other cool colors so i started thinking that since im going to be getting a body custom made anyway, i might as well get no routing for a trem and have them drill it for a mustang bridge/ bigsby combo as the bigsby is my favorite sounding/feeling trem. what do you guys think? anybody ever try that?

I haven't done it on a strat, but that's the exact setup I have on my Bronco which I customized.
The Bigsby/Mustang bridge combo is SUPER easy to work out, but being the type who plays his guitar stupid hard, I also put a buzzstop between the end of the Bigsby and the bridge. In part it will depend on how far down the body you have your bigsby and all that, but I was going on the advice that you're supposed to mount the Bigsby as close to the "butt end" of the guitar as possible.
If you wanna see some pictures, I believe my step-by-step conversion is still up in the photos section of the SG101 yahoo group.

Why not? That's what Hank Marvin did all the time.

yea well it was fine for surf, but with some other styles i play (jazz, country) i like being able to play with the arm right in my hand while i play, and give everything a little vibrato

Still confused...that's exactly what Hank and lots of folks do...they pick while holding the trem bar.

You can certainly put a Bigsby or a Jazzmaster style vibrato on a Strat and if that's what you want to do, I say "go for it." But, just in the interest of making an informed descision, take a look at this.

Do a search within the Oasis store for "Hank Marvin tremolo arm" and see what you think about that.

oo that looks pretty interesting, actually, since im planning to buy a gretsch junior pretty soon, i think i will try out that trem arm, and hey if i dont like it ill still have a guitar that sounds and plays fantastic, regardless of how much i dont like the trem

Have you considered a Wilkinson? It looks more like Fender's vibrato, but IMHO it's better. For one thing, the arm does not screw in, you push it into the opening, which has a hex screw in the side that allows you to adjust the amount of tension that holds the arm in place. You can make it as floopy or as stiff as you like.

Another option would be a G&L Legacy. These are actually as much, if not more, Leo Fender than the lastest Stratocasters are. They've got nice deep body contours, a two point trem system, and the bar uses a set screw with a nylon button so you can adjust exactly how hard or easily it moves. They also have a master volume with a separate treble and bass cut instead of the tone control that Strats have, if that's something that you might find more useful.
These things are hand made in the USA and usually sell used from $500-600.

not to completly pirate this thread. But I always wanted to know more about G&L Guitars. There price for a handmade US guitar seems really fantastic. But I never had the chance to actually play one, so i'd rather not take a risk buying one off ebay. Anyone have some info?
