a 4x10 cab has 316 sq inches vs 2x12 with 226. More air equals more volume.
More speakers in a single cab = more frequency cancellation as well, which can in some cases translate to less cutting power in a dense mix. Particularly with a "scooped" EQ amp like a BF or SF Fender. So more air does not always equal more volume, just better (wider) projection.
Thanks for the clarification. A perfect example of how once you start examining the technical side of gear it's often more complicated than it seemed at first.

I play way too loud anyways but showman in a small room turned half way up at about every gig.
i put it on the tilt backs that helps and if its "too loud" i turn the speaker cab (or the whole amp) tward the wall.
I hate to play outside, i allways turn the amp louder than i would like to and it gets dirtyer than id like.
The showman is a down step in my volume...i used to be louder.
Forever i ran two amps, any two amps sounds fuller than one of anything.
The brown bandmaster and the brown showman sound great next to eachother, both loded with TAD's and both cabs loaded with JBL's.
Two diffrent things can be cool, i tend to like more of the same thing
ie on really big steak or a small steak and a small peice of chicken
both are tasty.
