Hello Group,

I've been working on Squad Car this week. I can't seem to get the chorus right. The songs pretty straight forward for a beginner like me, until I get to that chorus. Any tips? How should I be hitting those strings?

Thanks

Charles

Hi Charles,

please allow me to point out:

(I guess you mean the double stops over the changes: Dm/Am/E/Am?)

Beguin with what is possible, then move gradually towards your aim...
It´s a tricky double picking part, I would play them around the fifth position...tough over the years I´ve found it tends to sound better around the tenth position, and hitting the 2nd and 3rd strings...check out what is best for you.
Hope it helps...

Good luck!

Don't take it as gospel but perhaps it will get you started.

Thanks for the help. I get the idea of double picking on one string, but the chorus seems to require double picking on two, and that's something I need advice on.

Charles

Here's my narrative on the subject that should be clear as mud Laughing

I think most of the guys play it on the top two strings, I tend to play it on the top 3.

If you want to use the top 2, start with your first finger on A (1st string 5th fret), and your 2nd finger on F (2nd string 6th fret) Play down - down-up-down on those 2 stirngs. Then put you pinky on the B (1st string 7th fret) Play the top two string once, move your pinky up 1 fret to C (1st string 8th fret) play the top two strings twice (down-down might be easiest). The move your pinky back down to the B (1st string 7th fret) and play the top two strings once.

Next is the Am part. Bar the top two strings at the 5th fret. And play just like you did for the D part above, except after playing the C with your pinky, just lift it for the last note so that you play an A at the 5th fret.

Next is the E part. 1st finger on G# (1st string 4th fret) 2nd finger on E (2nd string 5th fret) play 3 times (down - down-up-down). Then bar your 2nd finger across the E (where it already is) and A (1st string 5th fret) play once, then pinky on B (1st string 7th fret) play the top two strings twice, the lift your pinky off the B, and your 2nd finger off the A (but leave in on the 2nd string E) play the top two strings once.

Back to Am - play it just like you did the first time.

Then do the whole thing again. Except when you finish up the E part, play the top two stings (G# and E) twice instead of once, and then play an Am chord with vibrato dip.

Just takes practice to get your pinky coordinated and pick up the rhythm.

I think you mean 4th, 5th, and 6th string right?

No, I'm talking about the 1st and 2nd. We are talking about the bridge, aren't we Question

It just requires practice. Use up and down strokes and start slow. Good luck!

Chaz, The "Pounding Drums" DVD has a good Squad Car section. I'm not sure if it's still in print at the moment but if you can get hold of it you'll see how it works right away.

The things that helped me with that part of the song was to relax my hand and pick near the neck pickup or even onto the fretboard.

Thanks Jeff, that really helps. You broke it down for me, now all I've got to do is practice practice.

Do you usually go for a thick, thin, or medium pick with stuff like this?

I thought you were referring to the verse. Sorry.
