I ordered one of these, from Musician's Friend on Saturday, and it arrived today. Once out of the box, I plugged it into my Line 6 Guitar POD 2.0, to tune it, then switched to my Peavey TransTube 258 EFX combo, for my first "drive." Although I'm planning to upgrade the pickup and hardware with Gibson components, I realized that I have me a decent lil' surf guitar, with its single dogeared P90 at the bridge. The Vintage Sunburst choice wasn't available, when I ordered it on Saturday, so I went with the Ebony finish. My only complaint, here, is the pickup cover and jack plate being cream, against the ebony finish. Since I'll be upgrading to Gibson components, that's easily rectified, and except for the white around the pickguard edge, I'll have a nice blackout look going.
Now, whenever I'm actually geared up to start recording my first album, which guitar should I use for lead, and which should I use for rhythm? My choices here are, my Epiphone Les Paul Jr. 90 (single P90 at the bridge), and my Fender So Cal Speed Shop Strat (single Alnico humbucker at the bridge). There are several guitar instrumentals that I've been "cooking," for a number of years, for which this decision will be a non-issue, with the first instrumental I record consisting of guitar, bass and drums, and I've already decided that I'll use the LP Jr. for that one. Another instrumental will have a baritone lead, but I'll have to wait until I've converted my Squier Bullet Special, for that.
In the future, I can see this recent addition to my guitar collection making its way into surf guitar instrumentals...more likely at lead, and backed by either a Stratocaster, or something with two P90s.
