IMO, flatwound on a strat sucks. Let that to Jaguar/Jazzmasters. I use D'Addario EXL115 (011-49) on my strat and they're great !

+1 I agree, Strat-type guitar machines don't seem to like flats much. Neither do Precision-type bass machines... |

Just jumped up to Kurt Mangen 11-52 flats with a wound third on my Strat. My fingers are a little sore after 30 minutes, but I'm not going back. The tone is amazing. These aren't cheap and I'm not good enough to justify them, but the sound! —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. |

Anyone else here use Kurt Mangen flats with wound thirds? 11's or heavier? On Strats? On anything else? —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. Last edited: Dec 31, 2011 16:51:25 |

I run D'Addario XL115's (11 - 49)round wounds on all of my Strats and Tele's. I have an Epi G-400 (SG) with 10's. I haven't used flats since the 60's. Maybe I should try a set on my Jazzmaster. Last edited: Jan 23, 2012 22:38:04 |

Since you have other guitars with rounds I would really recommend putting some flats on your Jazzie for variety. D'Addario Chromes are widely available but Thomastik Swing flats are definitely worth what you pay for them in terms of sound, feel and longevity. —-Nick |

You know, Right now the D'Addario's sound great on the Jazzy, but I think you've convinced me to "take the plunge" :o) What size flats are you using? wound 3rd? |

Just to add to the conversation. I would never have thought to try these if not for ... They are on the Jazzmaster I just bought: Thomastik-Infield Vienna Jazz Swing flat-wounds (JS112) Medium Light, 12-50 with a wound third. These are great strings or Ivan would not have used them on this guitar. Smooth as glass, easy on my fingers and sound great. He also sent these along with the guitar and also likes them a lot: Gibson L-5 Medium (12-56) Round-wound. I'll put them on later when I need to change strings and see if they're better. —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. |

I played my Jaguar yesterday, still has the same set of Rotosound Flatwounds .12s that I put on it in 2008! Really good strings, for that guitar. I couldn't stomach them on a Jazzmaster or guitar that wasn't mean to play surfy type music exclusively. Noel, the Gibsons are really good strings.... However... You tried the Thomastiks first, there is generally no going back after using those strings. They are so buttery... I don't use any flats anymore, and I abandoned Thomastik's Bebops(roundwounds) and I just use DR Pure Blues .11s on everything i own other than the Jag. Cost is the reason for this, and the fact that I don't care what my strings sound like. The Pure Blues play really well, that is what really matters. I have ancient strings on my ES-355 as well, so nasty... I like old strings, although the ES-355 really needs new ones BADLY. If you have an acoustic guitar you cannot find a better string than the Thomastik Plectrums. Nothing compares to those. |

OK, I bit the bullet. Put a set of D'Addario 12 flats on my Jazzy, wound 3rd and all. All I can say is WOW!! I haven't had that tone since the '60's. Punchy, and very lively. fat tone... I love it!. I may swap out the 3rd for a 22 plain as I like to bend the G alot. But I have to thank you for the suggestion, worked really well for me. |

I'm so glad the flats are working out for you! Punchy, for sure. I still use Chromes quite a bit because most music stores seem to sell them these days, but Thomastik Swings are my favorites. The 13 gauge set doesn't feel as heavy as you'd think. And if vintage tone is what you're after, they beat out even the Chromes. Something to think about for your next string change! -Nick |

Most of my electrics get Ernie Ball 10s, my Gretsch hollow bodies get 10-52 Hybrid Slinkys. I just put EB 12s on my strat. Makes trem picking a lot easier, but it's really mangling my fingers. I've never had callouses from playing guitar until I put those on. If that continues I'll have to back off a bit, but I like them so far otherwise. How many guitars are enough? Just one more... |

I use D'Addario 10s on pretty much all of my electrics. My fingers are too whacked to handle heavier strings, although I use 11s on my Ibanez hollowbody. I've never gotten flats to grow on me. They just don't feel right. —Shawn Martin |
