That's an unanswerable question. It depends what sort of sound you like... some bassists like a lot of top n' twang - some like an in-your-boots sub-bass sound. Best idea is to get rounds some stores, try different set-ups and see what you like. —http://www.myspace.com/thepashuns Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery. |

It's a quite simple answer. While I really dig the sound Mitch (The Surge!) gets from his JBL M-151's, he baby's them a LOT. Over the years we've tried and blown almost every speaker made. The EV's are as close as anyone has ever come to building a really great sounding, loud, clean and practically indestructible 15" speaker voiced for bass guitar. My two EV-15B's have been in continuous service since 1997. Prior to that they resided in my floor wedge monitors, and they were both used when I bought them around 1980. If your amp loves a 2 ohm load and you are going with 2-15's, consider some of Peavey's Black Widow series speakers (4 ohm). I have a pair that rock................... ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

I agree with all the replies in this thread. Main thing is your personal taste and the tone you want to ultimately get, because Bass is nothing but tradeoffs, both physical equipment and tone. As Zak mentioned, I'm likely not playing your bass, but here's my experience: For a "rounder" sound with twangier clarity and responsive punch, you may consider a 2x10 cabinet instead of 1x15. Or a speaker combo? Can't recommend a brand because again they all have their tradeoffs. My standard rig with The Twang Tens is a David Eden WT-600W head with a 1x15" Bag End bass speaker compact cab. Bag End has a reputation in bass speakers specifically because they are of choice for discos and sound systems in clubs. They've never dissappointed me. I go for a "plunky" sound in the Twang Tens with the Dano Longhorn using flatwounds, but I can use the same rig to practice with The Aquamarines using a roundwound P-Bass and still get the rounder ballsy tone out of the 1x15 Bag End plus Eden head that I want. I have three Bag End speaker cabs (2x10, 1x15, 1x18), which combine for the size and tone needed for each type of gig and are still individually manageable/luggable by one guy. Same Eden head for all circumstances. 1x15 (most club gigs) Why don't I use the 2x10s at club gigs? Because I find that although punchy, the "plunk" will be to "tinny" and I'll miss the low-end in tone to fill the room. I am sacrificing some degree of "punch" using only the 1x15, but you can hear the bass tone in most club environments when the band plays at modest levels. There's no one answer. I spent alot of time experimenting before finding what I liked. That's my ultimate recommendation...experiment! |
