It was a noble effort, but trying to impose strict timing on the tocatta section is kind of problematic, and I would have had the second guitar doing one of the fugue voices to add another layer of texture. I applaud the idea, though. I like seeing people bring songs from other forms into surf and see what they can do with them. —Ralph Be at one with the universe. The Twang Marvels always surprising us with fine musicianship but to be honest if i'd paid to see them and they pulled too much of this out of the bag i'd be looking at my watch, thinking about walking out. I'd be thinking geez if i wanted to hear music three million years out of date i'd go to the Royal Albert Hall or something. |

Very cool. I saw on their Myspace last week that they were doing a Bach Festival in Leipzig and they had a few of the tunes uploaded on their page. They're no longer there though. —Ryan |

I doubt this is a staple of their set, they probably only perform it at select shows. I thought it was breathtaking, the amount of effort to arrange such a piece for a surf band should not be underestimated. —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

I have been there and it was absolutly awesome!!! I haven't heard anything like this before. Great tone, great arrangement, great musicianship! Absolutly wonderful and incredible. They also played a duett between Alex and Yolanda where everyone picked the next note, this was so beautiful. The also had there 10th wedding anniversary and kissed each other on stage http://www.reverbnation.com/bangmustang |

No, that's true. It's a daunting undertaking. Coming from a piano/organ/classical background, I miss some of the other voices in the fugue, but I respect them for all the work they put into it. —Ralph Be at one with the universe. If you can't do that, at least be at one with your guitar. |

that was excellent. For those of you poo=pooing this...you need to get yer heads out of yer butts and expand a little. Nothing is new, whether you think it is or not. —Shawn Martin |

I agree. While I still thought it was fantastic, it does lack the punch that the piece has on organ. It is a Fugue, why was there no counterpoint? The other guitarist should have been going at it as well. The Toccata and Fugue isn't necessarily a beautiful piece of music, although it is nothing short of brilliant and awe-inspiring. Where it succeeds is in being played on the organ and the absolute chaos that is being played by all four limbs of a humans body. Check out this version: However, this is one of the best efforts I've seen in the genre in a while. I'd like to see more counterpoint in surf music. We have quite a bit in our band, and I'd like to expand on that. I asked our guitarist shortly before we went on hiatus to write a fugue for the band. That could sound terrible though. I told him to make it so all 4 instruments were playing in the fugue. |

Do you mean the one guy who wasn't amazed? He still liked it, yet he just wishes they had captured the song a little better. And I'm sure he is plenty expanded in his musical tastes, if he was expressing regret at the cover person not being a proper fugue. And the fact that he recognized the Tocatta section. |

No, I guess Crumb mostly. Yeah, it may not be perfect but I would hardly consider walking out of a show. Part of the reason LTM are so great is that they do a lot of tunes that are based in the classics or traditional songs. —Shawn Martin |

Celtic rock is what is wrong with the world. I love traditional Irish and Scottish music. I really love it, absolutely brilliant. Happiest music on the planet. However, Celtic rock is the the devil. There is nothing even Celtic about the music. It is just Irish music with electric violins, piccolos, and a full orchestra. |

Dude, I'm sorry. I totally didn't see Crumb response. That response is pretty stupid. |

I disagree, that stuff is for older lower-middle class Americans to think they are being cultured. At any of those concerts when they pan to the audience it is all people 50+ with their parents. Granted the audience could be different in other parts of the country/world. Coffee and poetry is designed to make young people think they are being cultured. |

Touche. I guess I should edit that slightly to both age groups. It was the same thing when Setzer, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy et al started the retro big band thing. All of these kids thought it was the coolest thing. I was saying "HELLO?" Why don't you try listening to Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, and all the original bands that were doing this stuff 40 years earlier. But the answer was generally, "ooh, that's old!" —Shawn Martin |
