I've been working on this for over a year - learning the songs and sizing up potential band members. Finally we have a bass player and a drummer and had our first practice on Monday. It sounded awesome!! We have a gig lined up on Aug 16th, and another at the Punx Picnic in September so I'm pleased it worked out OK...
We've got these songs so far: Mr Moto, Pipeline, Secret Agent Man, Wipeout, Penetration, Cecilia Ann (Pixies), $10 Stare (Swiv-o-matics) and Batman. next on the list is Squad Car, El Gato, and She Walks on Bars by the Swiv-o-matics, and Misirlou, eventually.
I come from a punky background, so these are coming out more like Agent Orange than the Ventures...
Anybody got any more suggestions for songs? I prefer than bassy, driving ones more than the gentle melodic style.
We're based in Plymouth (in the UK) and oddly there seem to be no surf instrumental bands that I've heard of, despite being in the heart of the UK surf country!
Look forward to hearing any tips, ideas, and suggestions about improving our show.
Cheers
D

Greetings
try listening to some stuff from Huevos Rancheros, Estrumental, Coffin Daggers, The Ghastly Ones, The Longhorns, Surf Coasters...etc
you'll find there a lot of punky-rocky-surfy tunes
and then move to your own material
Good luck!

I don't think I've ever heard anybody cover the Swivs before, cool!
Looks like you have plenty of standards already, think about writing some originals too.
Welcome!

Da Ron - you should come on up to Brighton. We have three instumental surf-ish bands at the moment, despite having no surf at all!

I'm really thinking of doing something similar. Like the OP I don't think it would turn out just like the original music though. How much leeway does someone have when adapting songs like this? I suppose it would really only matter to hardcore surf fans but still, I am curious.
I also really like the fact that you can have a surf band and just do a set of "standards" Takes a lot of pressure off you as far as making originals. Also, a lot of the songs are known or familiar so it's good to get a crowd goin' I think.

That is a good way to really bore people, too.
Well, bore some surf enthusiasts, true. But it could work on the unsuspecting public and provide needed experience for a band just starting out.

We just got done playing Coney Island, and Bongo Surf played a lot of standards, the crowd ate it up. They do put their own twist on it. For a lot of general public/non-surf crowd venues it works (pool parties, festivals, boardwalk concerts). Agree with Brian, good way to gain experience and get out and play.

That's fair enough, but if you are a bunch of newbie musicians just starting a band you probably aren't in a position to move the genre forward yet anway. Eventually, I would hope, as your skills progress you could start working on exciting originals.

But don't you think the Treblemakers do a lot of style borrowing? Is that much different than covers?
I wouldn't want to hear an AC/DC cover band but i think surf is rare enough to get away with especially i your just starting out and plan to write your own stuff in the future.

Definitely write original material. It is the best way to become a better musicians. Covering will probably only hurt your skills in the end. Plus, it will make you sound really generic as a guitarist/surf guitarist.
