Does the Jazzmaster cut it for the more aggressive, fast side of surf, or is a Strat required?

The Jazzmaster will cut it, definitely. I think the Astronauts lead player used a Jazzmaster, and Volcano Rick from the Volcanos sounds great with his. It depends on who is playing it of course, but there are lots of good examples of aggressive Jazzmaster playing out there. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Bambi Molesters. Depends if you find them agressive. I do, but people's opinions may vary. In my opinion there is not great Jazzmaster band than the Bambi Molesters. Dalibor and Dinko might just own the two best Jazzmasters out there. Dalibor's is prettier but Dinko's has character. |

to be honest, the aggressive of aggresive surf soiund is mostl in the reverb tank and a slightly breaking up speaker (JBL alu-cone) than in the guitar. strats jags and JMs can all be made to sound whimpy or agressive. JM's sound very good with the aggresive tone. one of the first surf bands I saw live some years ago was gein and the graverobbers on a sherwood green (?) JM- blew me away. Our lead guitarist has a Sherwood green Jazzmaster. It really looks great with the mint pickguard. |

I have also heard Gein's Green Jazzmaster of Death live and it does sound killer. I think Jazzmasters can sound just as aggressive as anything else, but I also think Jaguars naturally sound a little "nastier." —The Mystery Men? |

I always thought I had big hands, but never really had much trouble with the Jaguar. The Jaguar is great for the aggressive stuff, Randy Holden and Eddie Bertrand come to mind when I think of first wave guitarists. The first Untamed Youth album has a really good sound as well, but I think Deke said he use da Jazzmaster on the second album, and both tones are pretty close. I think with the proper amp settings you can make a Jaguar and Jazzmaster sound almost identical. —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

I wanted to chime in and agree that a Jazzmaster will do just fine in the aggressive surf department. Last time I saw the Blue Hawaiians, the guitarist played a Jazzmaster to the hilt...wicked crazy! -dp |

Maybe it's my setup, but I've found the Jazzmaster to be a little nastier than my Jag. Maybe the pickups are a little hotter thus giving it a little extra bite. I'm using the SD Antiquity 2's, not AV's so results may vary. I agree wholeheartedly about the reverb and speakers have much more impact on the tone than the pickups. I have some old Kendrick black frames in my pro that when pushed, break up beautifully.
