I don't worry much about whether it's surf either, I guess, except to please those who do. More and more the thing on vocals describes me too. I used to switch to vocals for the winter. But I've never been very good at listening to words. The vocals have always been large just part of the overall blur of sound. It takes a rather special song for me to perceive and learn the words. As I get older I have been trying to teach myself to listen to the parts and patterns of instrumental part of the music instead of just taking things in as gestalts. Vocals tend to pull your attention away from that, even if you're not really listening to the words.

The Regents did a (short) version of Delano Soul Beat on their "Live at the A.M.-P.M. Discotheque" album.

Thanks for that lead! I have to admit I'd never heard of them.

This says they were from Bakersfield, which explains a lot, as that's essentially the home of the Rhythm Kings (Delano-Bakersfield area). Nobody seems to list the contents of this record, but it looks like I can find a used copy.

Now there's some insight into the song! And if Tim doesn't mind being called history, some real history, too. I wonder if "Surf's Up" was a variation on the one that is now called "Surf Crazy" (like the Renegaid's LP but different), and that used to be called "Original Surfin' Hits" as a shorter Crescendo LP. It has the Renegaids' take on Delano Soul Beat, plus Myers' version of the Original Surfaris' Moment of Truth, the Rhythm Kings' version of Exotic, and the Deltas' versions of Intoxica and Soul Beat Pt II that the Raybeats did as a single piece. I discovered it about 25 years after Tim did and used to play a cassette tape I made from it and some other collections of the time constantly in the car. It's definitely a great place to start, whenever you start. Starting with it may explain a lot about my tastes, too. Previously mostly I'd heard a few standards, the new second wave bands and some not very exciting Challengers records of the kind you could find easily. (There are lots better Challengers records than the ones I had.) I say records because this was still shortly before the invention of those little round things called CDs. Some of the first CDs I found that I liked were the Supertones releases. I think I bought them from Frankie Dee or maybe even Amazon.

I have the record. Bought it for about 50 cents. It's a great "Frat Party" type album.

The track listing is as follows:

Side 1

Delano Soul Beat / Searchin'
Hully Gully
Linda Lu
Comin' Home Baby
Mojo Workout

Side 2

Peanut Butter
Sugaree
Blue Suede Shoes
Gonzo
Poison Ivy / Theme and Close

"Gonzo" is a pretty good instro and their version of "Comin' Home Baby" is really good.

One of the guitarists plays a Jazzmaster judging by the front cover and their sound is very surfy kinda Astronauts-ish with quite heavy reverb.

Sounds like a vocal band of the surf music period. I will definitely try to get a copy of this.
