Permalink Role of the guitar in surf rock

New Topic

Hi, I'm curious about the structure of the genre, but I'm not sure where to start, so I'll just lay down a few questions that you guys might be able to answer.

What is the role of the guitarist? (lead instrument, mid instrument, just rythm, etc)
What scales / chords does the guitarist play?
What modes does the guitarist usually use?
What modes do the other band members use?
What are some good influences of surf rock?
Are there any unique tidbits about the guitarists role? (lots of reverb, tremolo picking, etc)

Thanks in advance

Is this for real? I don't know if I'm up to that much typing on a Monday morning ...

Hey Someguy

While I'm typing up your answer could you answer these questions.

What amps sound better Tubes or Solidstate?.

Are MIM Fenders as good as MIA Fenders?.

Why do Gibson Les Pauls sound different to Epiphone Les Pauls?.

Do curly guitar leads sound different to straight leads?

How many Trolls migrate from Harmony Central each week and end up in Surf Guitar 101? ............................................You could be the first.

Homework question? Smile Welcome to the site.

It's so nice of you guys to help a new drop in with their late... term paper.

Welcome here to SG101. Someguy Rolling Eyes

I really want to be that guy, but when I reflect, I've found that my favorite surf music is instrumental, therefore the guitar's role is that of the lead, voice (metaphorically speaking) and transition into the rhthym which the guitarist is also accountable for, in other words: the guitarist of a surf band is what makes the surf band, I don't know does anybody know of a great surf band with a lousy guitarist?
