Permalink question about show info on sg101

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I been wondering, if and when you look at SG101 for show info.
OR you are posting about your bands shows.
where do you go?
Show announcements, the Calendar, or the front page News Submissions
and Why?

I usually post stuff in the show announcements area, and sometimes in the
Calendar.
I have talked to a few people lately, and they have said they only look at the Calendar, or Show announcements, but not the other.
and I wonder why?

also to those of you that are having shows,
and don't post on sg101 about them.
Why not?

I think that this is a good way to get more people to your show.
and say for instance a guy is traveling to a city where he is not from,
for Work or Vacation or visiting family or friends. If he were to see your band was playing he might go to see the show.

I know that Myspace/Facebook/Twitter/Email lists are still the best place to promote shows, along with printed flyers and word of mouth.
but I think its odd to not post on here about all of your shows.
unless of course its a private party, then your just bragging.

thoughts?

I look at the show announcement forum mostly. I think I've posted most of our shows there too.

Maybe we can make the calendar RSS and/or send out email reminders

Potentially silly question, but could you have the email be a voluntary thing? I think it's a good idea, but I can see how it could get annoying.

I also mostly use the Show Announcement forum, but I'm going to try to utilize the calendar more. It's good that these tools are here... I should take advantage. Smile

I go to the Calendar and Show Announcements. The front page stuff I rarely glance at since it if it's something good and/or interesting it ends up on the forums.

Very.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Perhaps this is too complicated but, we could have calendar emails sent based on your zip code and x miles radius. Maybe there's already an app that does that? This will require the poster to put in the zip code when listing, which complicates it even further. Brian what do you think?

I've occasionally posted Colorado shows on the SG101 calendar in the past, for the heck of it, pointing the announcements at the local source for confirmation and in case of changes, but it gets to be a pain in the butt and I'm not doing it currently. Some of the groups post themselves, but not consistently, I think. It's probably more use for California groups/people.

If I'm travelling I look at the SG101 calendar for what might be happening where I'm going. Anybody playing in Lincoln, NE, next weekend. Smile Naw, I thought not.

RSS feed would be good. Email should be something you can subscribe to, definitely, as opposed to automatic. Not very useful though, if it were for everywhere.

I get local show information mostly from MySpace, though I try to make use of Gruvr, too, and that feeds off of MySpace. I also try to keep on the email list (if any) of local groups.

I always post to the Calendar and selectively to the Show Announcements forum. For example, if we're playing a Thurs. night show with an Irish Rock band, I wont create a new thread for that.

I normally don't post our shows. I'll post them if it is a show with other surf bands, or other genres that people here might enjoy. However, that is not the majority of our shows. There is normally pretty good turn out from our shows. We always send out myspace invites, always get in the local entertainment papers, and do the flyer thing for decent shows. That potential extra person on surf guitar 101 just doesn't matter enough to have them come out to a show they might not have a good time at.

For SG101 2.0, I'm going to use Google Calendar for our show calendar. The advantages of doing this are:

  • Less coding for me
  • Anyone can embed our calendar in their own blog or website
  • RSS Feed
  • People can opt-in to get reminders for events via SMS text messages or email

I try to provide the tools: news stories, forums, and calendar. People can use them as they see fit.

I always go to the Calendar first. Why? Because there is a Menu Button for it on almost every page and, once I'm there, it's a graphical structured list of gigs for the whole month. Very useful.

Finding the Show Announcements page however, is less obvious unless you intuitively know where to find it as an item under Surf Music on the Forums page. Therefore, it seems to be of secondary importance, IMHO. However, I'll go there if I don't find what I'm looking for in the Calendar. But Show Announcements format is free-form, there is no structure. So, I have to sort through each title hoping to find the pertinent locale, band and date, if given.

well it looks like I will have to start using the Calendar a lot more.

the thing I don't like about it is I input the info, then I have to wait to see it.
then sometimes I forget to go back to it.
where as on the show announcements I can see it right away.
then I take the link to that thread and send it to people that may not be on sg101 , or maybe don't look at the show announcements all the time.

I also like the show announcements for the comments that sometimes follow, or sometimes, there will be a meet up before the show for dinner, and all that can be discussed in the thread.
much more personable than a static calendar.

but to each his own.

Well perhaps with SG101 2.0, if you submit a calendar entry it will automatically create a forum thread...?

This is just going to muck up stuff even more, and make it harder to find gig info. God bless the Take-offs for having a great weekly gig, but do we really need a thread for every Sunday show?

As far as shows being posted on the main page under "News", bands have to distinguish between a regular gig and an event. Your playing at the local bar? Big deal, not news. The Great Lakes Surf Battle, The SG101 Convention, Tiki Oasis, those are events and newsworthy.

And Jeff, just use the Calender, it's very useful, but you might need to learn to have a little patience.
