Permalink Tab for "Pintor"

New Topic

A couple of weeks ago, somebody posed a "What is this tune?" query here about a YouTube video (a clip from the Russ Meyers movie "Lorna"). The tune turned out to be "Pintor" by The Pharos. As time went on, the tune grew on me and I decided to learn it -- and eventually, tab it out for posterity.

The early '60s band, The Pharos, is apparently shrouded in mystery. All I could find was that the song is credited to a Jack Irwin and it may be that "The Pharos" were a pick-up band of session musicians brought together for this recording. The tune is derived from a Spanish (Mexican?) song titled "Angelitos Negros" ("Little Black Angels"). The word "pintor" (Spanish for "painter") is sung over the turn-around phrase (C into a D minor chord).

That phase (and the tune) has been haunting my dreams and I can hardly keep my hands off the guitar to play it one more time. Here's my offering of the tune as I hear it. Please let me know if you have a better way of playing any part of this or if you find any typos.

Revision 1 (found a couple of mistakes):

P.S. A video featuring the original recording of "Pintor" may be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Huuu27THSW8. It is also on Disk 2 of the "Cowabunga! Surf Box".

It takes a lot of mussel memory to avoid clams.

Great tune and it practically plays itself so there's plenty of room for interpretation. I play it with an F instead of a Dm during the "B" part.

I play this one from Am the fifth fret (thumb hanging over style).

I use a quick Am to F6th instead of Dm.

That's part chord F with little finger on 2nd string/3rd fret... Name that chord!!

The description in the video says this of the name:
Named for the first lighthouse, in Alexandria

after googling I found they're talking about the Pharos, not Pintor.

Yeah, I think Pintor is from the lyrics of Angelitos Negros, the source song, which starts out "Pintor nacido en mi tierra ..." . While the group name Pharos matches the Pharos lighthouse of Alexandria in spelling, it seems more likely to be a rendition of Pharoahs, as in Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs (no connection with the Pharos Lighthouse or The Pharos band either one that I know of!). I mean, would you rather name your band for an old lighthouse - even if it was one of the wonders of the ancient world and a supreme phallic symbol among phallic symbols - or use a cool typical (and frequently real) Latin gang name? I think Spanish for Pharoah is actually Faraon.

Given how little is known about The Pharos, I sincerely doubt that.

I really stoked to find this tab! I just above suck level one and still training my ears.

If I could only find a tab for the Sandy Nelson/Polodor version of Casbah.

Many thanks for sharing the tab, Woody.
