Some friends, and I were thinking about putting together a compilation of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock/Punk bands who have played either covers of surf songs or inspired original surf instro tunes.I was thinking along the lines of the likes of Hanoi Rocks"Pipeline" ,and Anthrax "Pipeline".If any of you want to help me come up with a list of songs please feel free make suggestions.

Stuff like this?

Could tracks like Maiden's "Transylvania" or "Genghis Khan" make your list? If so, add Angel Witch's "Dr. Phibes" to your list.
The Descendents have a cool unlisted, untitled surf song that occurs at around the 2:40 mark during the run out of the last song ("Thank You") on their "Everything Sux" record.

That first Angel Witch album is a kajillion times better than any metal cover of a surf song you're gonna find.
edit: And why the hell is this in Show Announcements?

I liked Slayer's cover of Richie Podolor's Voodoo Juice.

I'm kidding about Slayer...I'd like to hear that though.
But seriously, I think you are only going to have a handful of Pipeline covers on your CD-R. Oh, you also said surf inspired. That's a bit harder to prove, probably.

Wasn't there an interview in Guitar Player with the guitar player in Motely Crue saying he loved surf music? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Brian not sure about Mick Mars, you may be right,
but I do remember EVH saying he started playing WDR and other instros when he was young.

What Brian said. There's plenty of killer metal instros but surf-inspired? Nah.

I was thinking more like Hard rock bands doing surf tunes, maybe even punk bands too.
The bands on that comp are surf bands more or less.

I don't think Muse is really a metal band, but their cover of Man of Mystery could be considered hard rock:

Johnny Thunders (former New York Doll) does a great version of "Pipeline' on his 'So Alone' release.
Raunchy enough to pass for Link !
I think Brian is right on how there's gonna be a lot of 'Pipeline's....

Thanks Jagshark for the Muse suggestion. This totally fits the bill I'am looking for.Their considered a pretty heavy band at times in my book.
PolloGuitar, Again thanks I almost forgot about Herman doing Wipeout, after viewing that corny as hell video,I seriously tried my hardest to erase that from my mind.Though I just might use it in the comp just for kicks.
Big Papu, again thanks for the Blind Guardian "Surfin'USA" connection, but I be damned if that's what I call a surf song.At least in my eyes. For one it's a vocal.I'm looking for "instros",but thanks for taking the time, and again I may add it it the comp just for kicks.I'm weird like that sometimes.
Just so you all know, cool points are being givin' to all at least make a effort to add to this list. Keep'em comin'!

O.T. I believe the Lively Ones do it as an instrumental. Not bad at all, though I'm not sure I don't prefer Bob Vaught & the Renegaids' take on Surfin' Safari.

Not instro-surf, and not heavy metal, but it's worth mentioning the Ramone's cover of Surfin' Bird.

Hmmm... okay, that`s not a so called surf song, but have you listened to "Merciless Onslaught" from Metal Church from 1985? Instrumental killer track!
I think sometimes of doing surf covers from metal (Thrash/Speed) songs.
You remember the Typhoons played Slayer`s "South Of Heaven" in an incredible version!?
I think some day we will do a side project called "Stormtroopers Of Surf" or "Surftroopers Of Death" or something like that?:D
Yeah!!!
