I'm thinking about a Galaxy 4, I saw Los Straitjackets and they can get the whole gamut of Fender tones with those babies and they seem to stay in tune for entire sets.
Anybody play these?

I would drive into Philly and try them out yourself first. I'm sure the LS's have custom made models by Dipinto himself, much higher quality then the korean ones he's selling currently. That being said, they seemed to be decent guitars for the price range. Definitely a different feel altogether from a Fender. —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

They're really great guitars, and I'm not just saying that because I have one for sale. That said, I personally prefer my JM and Jag better just because I like the more authentic tone, but the Galaxie 4 is cool for what it is. If you're interested, check out my ad in the for sale section. —Paul |

I'm a dealer for DiPinto. I have a sunburst Galaxie 4 with 4 on/off switches and a red Galaxie 4 with a 5 way switch. I'm around Riverside so let me know if you want to try one out. —There is Surf east of Sepulveda. Last edited: Sep 20, 2006 20:49:51 |

OOPS! I thought I saw that Moondevil was in Lancaster PA, not CA. Obviousy a drive into Philly would prove difficult. Duh —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

I just ordered one...a lefty. It's my first foray into electric guitar, after many years of playing sax in an R&B band. Had them put some .012 flatwounds on there, too. Anyone else try one of these? Obviously I'll want to play on it for a while before I think about any mods, but it has already occurred to me that with the four pickups controlled by rocker switches and usable in any combniation, I could swap in something different for one of the middle pickups as a secret weapon...a minihumbucker or something. |

I tried flats on mine and wasn't crazy about it on that guitar. See what you think, but I thought it kinda deadend it too much. —Paul |

I figured I'd give it a shot...I'm already having second thoughts. And a guitarist buddy of mine just told me some horror stories about a set of .011s tearing up his fingertips, so I'm rethinking the whole "heavy strings" idea... Any idea what the guys from Los Straitjackets use? |

I'm pretty sure they're using round wounds. Last time I saw them I was up pretty close. Not sure what guage. Hang in there with the heavy strings though. You'll get lots of heavy string support on this forum for sure. —Paul |

For those guys interested in Los Straitjackets and DiPintos, I've played Pete's (he has the guitar along with the bass). It was pretty comfortable to play. He had it setup with flatwounds. Unfortunately I didn't really put it to a test. It was just sitting in his studio and I picked it up and started noodling. I don't think there was anything custom about it, but I'll bet they were hand picked out whatever batch they came out of. Rick |

I've always favored a rather difficult setup on saxophone --- I use a medium plastic baritone reed when I play tenor --- so I figure I'll get used to doing the same on guitar. |

Brian, how about a poll on string gauges used by SG101 folks? So, 9-42, 10-46, 11-49, 12-52, 13-56, or thicker. I'd find that interesting..... Ivan —Ivan |

Ivan I'll make that the next poll for the front page, unless you want to start one in the forums. (Whenever you start a new topic you have the option of making it into a poll). —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I'll just start a poll in the gear forum - probably better to have it here than on the front page. I'll do it in a couple of hours, gotta go teach some classes first.... Ivan —Ivan |
