Build a pocket Theremin

Found this on another forum and thought some of you might be interested. I don't understand the attraction myself.....but I might build one anyway!!!! Duh

Ever since seeing "Forbidden Planet", I've wanted to have -- or at least play, a theremin. That and Ann Francis.

It takes a lot of mussel memory to avoid clams.

I remember building this with an electronics kit back in the 70's - I thought I could play the middle bit of "nutbush city limits" with it with a wave a hand or two. This one looks like fun.

This isn't a true theremin - its a bit like a thing we have in our band called a 'light weevil' - basically run by a light sensitive resistor. You can't tune it like a theremin, but you can add a wonderful array of savage electronic noise to your set by waving your hands at it, flicking lighters next to it etc..

It has some other controls as well, none of which I know the meaning of, but its surprisingly intuitive and fun to play.

We sometimes also play with a real theremin player - he's an odd guy. He has one of these:

I wish I could call myself a "real" theremin player. I've got two theremins, a Theremaniacs theremin, which is not good for much more than sound effects, because it doesn't have a volume aerial. Sounds cool though, and we use it a lot in one of my bands just for weirdness EFX.

My other theremin was handbuilt in Tasmania by Kees Enkelaar, who, unfortunately doesn't seem to be making them anymore. It's a full-blown theremin, and I've tried and tried for several years now to be able to play a reasonable tune with it. If I were blessed with "perfect pitch" it would make it alot easier!
Alas, it's not the theremin, it's ME... playing the theremin as a true musical instrument is a lot harder than it looks!
