Ferenc, anyone, did the mermen ever do "3rd stone from the Sun" live or in any version?
or would that be too obvious.
(bigtikidude)

I have heard them do 1983 a merman I... but I don't know about third stone. As you know, the Insects play a few bars of it in their song "Third Stone"

I've heard the ShiTones do both "1983....." and "3rd Stone...",
but I've never heard the Mermen do them. In a conversation
that I had with Jim Thomas, Jim stated that he thought that Dick
Dale's assertion that Jimi's line that "you will never hear surf
music again" was about Dick's having cancer was totally untrue.
Jim thought it was Jimi's lament that surf music's run had been
wiped out by the British Invasion and the pop music that took
over the airwaves after 1963.

I doubt that we'll ever know exactly what Jimi meant, but I think
that it's safe to say that Jimi was not trying to "dis" surf music.
It is established that Jimi "dug" surf music. Although he usually
toured with Marhsall or Sunn stacks, Jimi loved the sound of
Fender amps, specifically Showmans, which he often used in the
studio. We've all seen the photos and/or video of Jimi playing
Jazzmasters, Jags, and of course his beloved Strats.

I've heard that the Mermen at least partially took their name from 1983. . . Is that also true?

Yes.

I looked it up, and it said he was talking about how his friend/mentor Dick Dale, was told by his doctors that Dick had three months left to live due to Dick's cancer. That was supposed to be a salute.

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

I really think Jimi was dissing surf, It had to sound square and tame next to what he was doing at the time. I know this is an unpopular idea, and he did play through Showman amps but I just can't see him thinking surf was cool in the era he helped usher in. someone should ask Seymour Duncan or Eddie Kramer what they think.

I'm sure Jimi was getting too much attention and Little Richard was supposed to be the star of the show.

Same thing when Jimmy would open for Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry quote Arrow "This young "N" is playing guitar with his teeth. How do I compete with that?"

Yeah Zak, I do have to agree with you.

I'm thinking the same thing, i mean compared to what jimi was doing back then surf music was like wrapping an elastic band around a machbox and twangin' it! He dug all kinds of music and had a great sense of humour. I just see the third stone lyrics as a good natured joke.

As an Englishman growing up through this period i want this joke to be directed at Hank Marvin for being so square but there's a wider picture i'm sure. Jimi wanted to upgrade the music scene but not nessersarily do away with old musics altogether. He wanted to stretch the boundaries of music and use it to get people together and solve world problems.

The way i read the third stone lyric are that he's the spaceman with out of sight cool space music, should he land and transform this planet with his music or should he leave you with Hank Marvin. wink - joke.

There a bunch of Jimi interviews around the net including the "Jimi Speaks" cd: http://www.jimispeaks.com/

but did u guys know about this ....aha!

a while ago i did some messing around with the first 30-40 seconds of third stone from the sun, and i had written down what he says in that slow-mo part he says. i thought it was some kind of weird effect at first but no its him saying some kind of poetry, i had a better audio editor back then but so far this is what i came up with, i sped the sound 100% and u can clearly hear him say some stuff.i lost the words to what he was saying but hopefully someone can write it down i need ear phones to listen to it and have none.but yea nothing satanic or evil about it though ahaha if that's what ur thinking.

haha i was such a hendrix freak

In his defense, I think he meant that in the slangy "not to sound gay as I say this, but..." fashion. But whatever. It's all pretty unintelligible anyways. Rolling Eyes

Surf guitarist doesn't have anything to do with it. 'Homo' is a stupid thing to call anyone.

I agree with Zak even before he speaks...but...how come every thread -no matter what the topic -sooner or later comes back to Zak? Conspiracy methinks? What do you think Zak? ah, now I've done it too.:x

...now back to Jimi's comment...likely, he was higher than a kite on that song, I believe, so I wouldn't treat his comment like a quintessential sociology paper on the existential parallel symbolism on the prolonged existence of surf music, personally, in my view, that is.
