Hey Dude,
I use a Shure 545 SD Unidyne III to mic the amp for recording and either a Presonus Inspire 1394 interface or an ART TUBE PAC into my Mac in GarageBand and get stellar results. Any good Shure/EV/Sennheiser dynamic mic should get you very good results as long as you don't distort the input to your recording machine or software.

The 545 is really much like the Shure SM57. Same capsule, IIRC. Has an on/off switch and a shorter body. Harmonica players favor them, presumably because they are smaller and easier to hold. We took advantage of the switch and used one as a talkback mic when we recorded last time around.
Anyhow, you really can't go wrong with an SM57, right? I have used and still own all kinds of dynamic mics, though: Shure Beta 57A, Audix i-5, Sennheiser MD-421, Sennheiser e609. They all have their quirks but all produce pretty similar results. Now that I type this I am reminded of how much I liked the e609 when I tried it. But if I had to pick one mic, it would be the SM57 because it can be used for many other applications as well.

The SM57 is fine (better for close mic'ing cranked Marshalls though IMO). For Surf or for cleaner amp sounds there are any number of other mics I'd probably go to first. The Sennheiser 421 is probably my favorite or I'd prefer to not close mic at all and use a large condenser at a distance. The best insanely cheap mic is the Blue Ball or Kickball mics but you need phantom power for them even though they're dynamic mics. They work great for close mic'ing and have a nice proximity mild bass boost effect for a full rich sound...can't really beat 'em for around $39 on blowout if you shop around.

I like the Sure SM57, it works well...also the Sennheiser e609 is a great guitar cab microphone. I use the e609 all the time...great sound!
