I hate to even respond to this thread (for fear it will turn into another like the offshoot thread on beam blockers
) ...but I installed the TAD short bottles...and....they kick ass!
The JJs that were in it were fine tubes (but I had gigged with them for over a year and they were used when I got the amp so they were due for replacement) and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to someone looking for good reliable inexpensive tubes.
The TADs sound great though and were closer to the tone I was looking for than the JJs.
I'd say the JJs are more of a hi-fi sounding tube with extended lows and highs...kind of like the EQ of my Jazzmaster, or the EQ on a blackfaced Bandmaster. In other words the JJs were exaggerating my current EQ curve and the mids weren't as present as I would have liked. The bass on the JJs might be a little softer than on the TADs too but that could have been partially or fully due to the JJs being worn out.
The TAD tubes have a great midrange and possibly less bass and treble at the frequency extremes than the JJs do. They are just a really well balanced sounding tube that has some character to the tone (harmonics, attack). It also seems that I'll get more clean headroom than with the JJs but that could be due to biasing, new tubes vs old, etc.
Now for Ruhar's Vibroverb, I think the JJs are probably a great choice and you'll love them. I think their sound would enhance any open back combo amp (I wouldn't even bother trying any other tube than the JJ 6V6 for a DR). For a head with a closed back cabinet though I don't think the JJs would be my 1st choice after hearing the TADs. I bet the TADs would sound great in a JTM45 head too!
The short bottles are a welcome feature too...now I have more room for the power cord and vibrato pedal in my head box!
Thanks for the advice everyone!
