I have a helluva dilemma: What do I do tonight? Should I go see:
The Kilauea's & the Barbary Coasters in Albany (near Berkeley),
The Mermen (with original bassist Allen Whitman back in the fold) in
Fairfax (Marin County), or
Dick Dale & Pollo Del Mar at the Brookdale Lodge (in the Santa Cruz
Mountains)????
I live in San Jose so it's a bit of a drive for any of these shows,
Dick Dale about 1 hour each direction, the Kilaueas about 1:15,
and the Mermen about 11/2 hours.
Now it's a given that I'll see the Kilaueas, Pollo Del Mar, and the Pyronauts tomorrow at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco.
The Mermen will be at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz in a couple weeks.
Dick Dale comes through here about once a year.
What would you do? Man, we Californians have it rough!!!

Poor guy.
Personally, I'd go see Dick Dale and PDM.

My choice would be seeing the Kilaueas again.

In your shoes, my vote would be for DD and PDM. Fairfax is pretty far, and the Kilaueas also play in SF tomorrow.
The house I'm at tonight is only 5 minutes away from the Mermen show, so I'm gonna go there and just listen from outside (I can't get in.) Then tomorrow I'll be back in the east bay and head over to see the Kilaueas. I'm so busy and stressed out, this west coast lifestyle is such a toll.

I'm with wooza. You're going to the Hotel Utah show tomorrow and will have a chance to see the Mermen again soon. Go see DD and PDM tonight. Sam and Dax are a freight train behind DD. I saw them last weekend with the Pyronauts and was NOT disappointed.

all 3 of those sound like killer shows.
But.....
I say go to the Kilaueas show.
because they are from Germany and there is no guarentee that you'll get to see them after tomorrow.
Yes the Pollo/DD show would be cool, but I'm sure you see Pollo alot.
and DD well I'll leave that one alone...
Yes The Mermen with Allan is a big Deal, but from what I hear, he's going to be back for awhile. It seems.
So not to seem snobby, but the Kilaueas is the best bet, they are that good.

Thanks for all the recommendations! To those of you that saw
multiple shows by the Kilaueas, did they play essentially the
same set every show, or did they mix it up????

Different set every night.
some songs they play every set, but remember they have 3 cd's and know probably about 12 to 15 cover songs.
Bob, trust me go see the Kilaueas, you won't be sorry.
It'd be like the surf coaster or bambi molestors comin over, you want to see them as much as possible.
I wanted to go to Fresno to see them last night instead of the Eliminators.
But I just knew that was silly after seeing them 5 times.

I've already made my mind up that I'm going to catch the Kilueas tonight, but then again -- I can't make tomorrow's show
Anyone else going to the Ivy Room tonight? They're only playing live music there for 10 more days until the lease is bought out and that classy old dive is turned over to hands unknown, who will inevitably ruin the place. Damn surf-friendly venues getting bought out.

That settles it: the Kilaueas, it is!!! Thanks Jeff!!!! And thanks to everybody else for their input. Any choice would've been a "win",
but I can see the rest of these bands any time.
I can't wait!!!!

Yeah I'm sure the Kilaueas will be just as awesome as the other shows.
And I welcome one and all to my home town of Albany. It's funny that surfbandbill called it a> classy old dive
In Albany we call it "The Divey Room."

If you were in SoCal, you could have caught OuterWave last night from 9PM to 11PM at the Lomita Fair on a big stage with good PA and lots and lots of people for free. Anyway, OuterWave plays again at the Baja Cantina on Sept 20 at 7 PM for three sets.

The fair was in the grounds of the Catholic Church in Lomita. Anyway, had to bring my kit with a blank bass drum head. The graphics on the bass drum on my OuterWave kit is too graphic for church goers. (see http://myspace.com/outerwavesurf or http://outerwavesurfband.com) Had fun though, hip hop kids were dancing to our music and then giving us the thumbs-up sign. We had to do a private party earlier this afternoon in Fullerton. A baby shower. The mom of the baby used to be a former cheerleader, lots of good looking babes without their husbands or boyfriends. Another day in SoCal
We will be at our favorite party place on Wed, Sep 20 -BAJA CANTINA
