In my post, I was just saying I'm really put off by the trad Nazi bands and fans withe the closed minds. When I say I am put off by surf I mean the genre as a whole, not the actual music inside of it.

I think Billy just summed up, indirectly, why I don't like surf music much at the moment. It all sounds the same if you deviate at all you are no longer a surf band. It is ridiculous. Can't use a certain scale or key because it isn't surf enough or that amp is overdriving too much. It is a bunch of people trying to recreate this one sound from the 60s with no new musical growth while rewriting the history of what surf could be in the first wave all while completely lacking the grit and emotion these kids felt while they built a genre.
I think this is simply wrong. Though there may be some people out there that fit this description, the great majority of surf music fans seem to me to be quite willing to listen to all kinds of surf bands, trying all sorts of different things. And there are many bands producing great music, sometimes more trad, sometimes less so - the latter ones still being included under the surf music label by most people. I don't understand why you paint the entire scene with such a broad brushstroke, which I don't think applies to most people. That's all that I was saying.

So yeah, Billy doesn't like them, no biggie, it's all subjective, but he did start what turned out to be an interesting thread.

if I get this right, you're saying you're put off by the label and those that stand by it? As in, you'd rather say "I love rock & roll instrumentals" than wear a hawaiian shirt? If so I'm with you

For a modern surf group that uses keyboards brilliantly, I would say The Surfites! As traditional as can be and yet I would say that the keyboards are a crucial element of their sound--and I LOVE their sound! The keys are more of a Wurlizer electric piano sound, (think Pipeline), but on their latest, there is some organ which fits the space theme perfectly.
yeah I actually thought of that as soon as that pipeline video was posted. I guess if there were one person around here to somehow redefine trad it would be Klas.

Who? Dick Dale & the Deltones, the Belaires, and the Chantays. Somewhat later, the New Dimensions, and the Avengers VI. That's what comes to mind initially. I guess the Revels, too, though I they are not usually considered to be a surf group per se.
For harmonica, rather rarer, the earliest example that comes to mind is an interesting version of Pipeline I've heard by the Challengers. I'm pretty sure it's harmonica, but it might be some kind of reedy sounding keyboard.
Billy, Maybe more to the point would be specific examples that don't appeal to you, though? I admit I've never really liked the keyboards (or trumpet) in Miserlou.
Lately, I've kind of been wondering why the popular assessment of surf music is that it was the classic music for a guitar combo when essentially all the better known surf combos and their songs so blatantly employ keyboards and, especially, saxophone as well. How can saxophone be alien to surf music when everybody has to cover the sax parts with a guitar? And apparently a lot of bands didn't have bassists at first. I think all the pure guitar combos in original surf music, like the Fender IV and the Surf Teens, were relatively late. The early guitar only groups were mostly non-surfing, e.g., the Ventures, of the Shadows, or the Fireballs.

Instumental Surf for me is about a huge drum sound, and loud guitars.
Slacktone if you will, or the late Surfcoasters. That's the kind of Surf I dig.
The problem is, you can't have an opinion on this site without people gettin' their panties in a wad.

The cool thing about surf, I believe, is that it continually evolves. I'm down with the huge drum/huge guitar/huge bass theory of surf...but, I can also appreciate that things in the music world have evolved substantially since 1961-1965. evolution rules!

If the title of this thread used the word "should" instead of "could" no one would have "their panties in a wad", of that I am almost certain. Maybe it is just the "shot at sunrise" phraseology that causes some opinions to have less merit than others?

Now we're getting somewhere! Though I think the Surf Coasters used keyboards in a piece or two - I forget the song title - but these are certainly bands that do very nicely with the power trio format - with huge drums and, of course, huge guitar and bass, too. I think out-there drums are one of the most enchanting things about surf music generally, anyway.
I didn't mean to imply that it was wrong to do guitar combo surf. I just mistook your drift. I thought you were starting another of those "I hate sax" or "I hate trumpet" discussions. An amazing number of folks like the classical stuff either without quite noticing what the instrumentation is, or noticing it, but not caring for it. I automatically object in the oversight case, but, for those who just dislike the instruments ... well, like you said, taste is subjective. Personally, I think some of the toughest, edgiest classical stuff depends critically on keyboards and sax to make it that way.

It's one of the kinds I dig, too! But I'm kind of in there with the folks who like a variety of styles and don't mind some wandering off in other directions, though obviously I love the classical stuff, and I'm fine with people extending the workings in that vein or just covering it, too. With or without keyboards or saxophone.
