I'd appreciate it if any Mac users could post specific instructions on how to get connected to the server. The Mac client was written by a third party so it's user interface is probably not the same as the Windows client.

Brian, if I understand this feature, this opens up the possibilty for online jamming/playing together as well, right?

Cool

Ha-ha. A more realistic use would be to listen to Clint or Jet's show together.

I realize this TeamSpeak thing might be pushing things, but I did drag people away from an email list to a web based forum, so ya never know. Lets try it. I did just put down the crack pipe when I thought of the idea. It is only now that the Instant Messenger is getting some use so it may take some time. If no one uses it, it will go away. But I use it all the time in my other online life, and have made some good friends with it. I hope some of you check it out.

C'mon, aren't you curious to hear what WR sounds like people? What kind of an accent does he have? Wink

your other online life Shocked

Wink

anyway, not so sure whether this works out for me brian, time difference and all. the only time that seems convenient for chatting is friday night, if Im home, when most US people ar ehaving an almost weekend experience at the office. I doubt they'd chat out loud in those circumstances. (although there IS a company that sells soundproof cubicles Very Happy )

also, at that time everyone's doin' coffee, and Im at the pc with a shotglass and a bottle of Jose Cuervo - as you might have noticed last friday. I might be totally incomprehensible. anyway, normally my accent is pretty much midwestern, if anything, that's what they speak on television. I can do the "pienk panthuuuur" if you want, though.

I think the jam thing would work. as soon as it's up I'll see if I can plug into it.

Yeah, in my other online life I regularly talk to a couple guys in England, so I usually only catch them in the afternoon my time. But we do overlap a bit.

The system is up and operational right now.

Jamming probably won't work too well. You can really only hear 1 person speaking (jamming) at one time. But playing licks to each other is probably not out of the question. Hell what do I know try it out. Very Happy

Tip #1: TeamSpeak can be configured to be either voice activated or "push-to-talk". Push-to-talk is useful if you have a spouse or kids who yell at you (or you yell at them) and you don't want everyone in the channel to hear that (trust me on this one 8O). However, voice activated is a little more convenient when you are playing your guitar to someone, unless you have 3 hands. Smile

Push to talk is where you configure TeamSpeak to only broadcast your voice when you are holding down a certain key on your keyboard. You get to configure which key.

If you are listening to music or a radio show while using TeamSpeak, that will bleed into your mic and may cause feedback or an echo. This is why having a headset or headphones is useful. With a headset audio is piped to your ears and kept away from your mic. This is less of a problem if you are using push-to-talk, as it will only come through when you speak.

More tips to follow...

Tip #2: For PC users, make sure your mic is enabled. Every windows machine I've seen has this in a different spot. Basically you want to find your audio mixer, and find the mixer for recording options (and not playback). Make sure your Mic is checked and the volume is at a reasonable level (at least half way).

Some PC's also have a hard to find Mic Boost option. My mic was useless until I found it on an advanced tab in the sound recording options. Whether you have this or not seems to depend on your sound card or sound hardware on your motherboard.

Big thanks to my friend Dick (flatwound01), who was the first member I chatted with!

I have installed a block on the left that shows who is on TeamSpeak and what channel they are in.

quick questions....

  • what do the "channels" mean?

  • think I could use a norm mic (with all the necessary adapter plugs)?

  • brian, does it work pretty much like conference call?

(btw, I hope this doesn't mean the end of the chat-feature?)

WR
- what do the "channels" mean?

Think of them as "rooms". You can only hear and talk to the people in your room.

WR
- think I could use a norm mic (with all the necessary adapter plugs)?

I think so!

WR
- brian, does it work pretty much like conference call?

Yes.

WR
(btw, I hope this doesn't mean the end of the chat-feature?)

Nope, the IM feature will stay.

TS == TeamSpeak

The (U) after your name indicates that you are unregistered (using the anonymous login). I currently have the server configured to kick unregistered users after 15-20 minutes of silence. Remind me when I'm on the TS server with you and I can get you registered so this won't happen. You will then have your own unique login/password to get onto the server (which the TS client remembers for you).

Here is a super cheap mic:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836186004

You can get mics like that for up to $20.

I have this:
Altec Lansing Headset

Mac users might want to get a USB headset since newer Macs seem to lack mic input jacks. Here is one I found at random:

Brian, I bought a mic today and will install the software shortly - when's a good time to try the teamspeak thing?

I am usually, though not always, on for brief periods in the evening (GMT-6). I also try to be on Saturday & Sunday afternoons. Just check the TeamSpeak status block under the shoutbox. I'm not sure but I think only flatwound01 and myself have used it so far.

If there are more than a few people interested we could try to schedule a time.

(Nice talking with you last night Dick Smile )
