Permalink SuRfAcE's Amp rig...fender hotrod and 15" cab

New Topic

Here's a pic of my guitar and amp set up...

image

Fender Hotrod Deluxe amp. Custom made 15" extension cab, ported for bass response (designed for bass guitar).

So far works great, relatively small and I can just take the combo to play or the cab to get the sound up off the floor and the controls within easy reach...more clean headroom and air moving.

I also use an old Ibanez AD100 analog delay box...about 300ms (max delay) mixed really low and one repeat. I like the sound of the delay to give ambiance and extra depth with definition that is sometimes lost with reverb. The "hot rod" though has a lovely valve driven fender reverb with plenty of depth as well and the echo adds to this effect.

It's easy to reach over and turn up the delay volume to get a ping pong sound or special delay effect...or go nuts and put it into oscillation to make whale sounds...hahaha

The reverb on a Hot Rod Deluxe is Solid State, not tube.

I might add as a Hot Rod Deluxe owner.
The reverb is no near the sound you get from a tank.
Not, even, close.
But it is better than no reverb at all. Wink

No...well I wasn't saying it was the ultimate surf rig or anything.

Well...i was under the impression it was tube, forgive that if it is an error...however especially on the clean channel it makes a fairly drippy and very fendery reverb...I wouldn't be game to kick it though.

Other than a genuine fender stand alone reverb unit, this does an excellent job IMO more than adequate for the task. Clearly I'm not a purist, the echo isn't tape either! And the guitar is a tele so marks off there too!

Surface: Was you on the 'ol amber nectar when you took that photo! just kidding you Wink Looks a good budget rig you got there, it's easy to scoff when vintage ampware is falling off the trees USA but i've heard it's not so easy to find in Austrailia or rather just darn right expensive to import. I use a holy grail pedal for practice which takes me further than my on-board tank but it doesn't cut the mustard really, can't wait to try out a true outboard unit.

It's true we yanks take a lot for granted, you'll have to try to forgive us when we come across as a bit gear snotty.

i didnt even notice that your not in US. The way i understand its super hard to get any gear over there and double or triple the price than US.
That sucks. and ebayers dont wanna ship over seas. bummer

Surface,
I dig your setup. It doesn't really matter what you as long as you play it and enjoy it.

hahaha...yes well out here in the outback!

anyway...no offense taken. I got this amp at half price as new from a guy who only used it for home recording and less than a year old. Previously, and for a very long time I used a roland GA60 (like a jazz chorus but with graphic) for everything. The reverb on that was pretty deeeeep! Actually thing was bullet proof and still going strong. I could run in stereo at 100 watts with 2x12" and the 15" if I wanted to...hahaha

I think the 15" does produce a nice full and big sound and headroom without increasing the actual volume or amp specs...the hot rods 12" can struggle at higher volumes and I think with a clean sound, it's important to move a lot of air to avoid being too directional...especially when there is no PA and re-micing of amps (always the case!).

There used to be gear about at bargain prices in the old days...as a kid I once had hold of a fender concert (i think it was) with a huge cabinet of 10" speakers as I recall. Another time I bought a fender custom tele for ridiculously low $$...the guy had strung it with heavy acoustic bronze strings for some reason and the neck was all bowed...a set of 10-46's and the thing just sprung back level...hahaha...i sold it for a set of tyres when I was twenty...

but alas...the 70's are long gone...and so are the bargains with all the vintage people getting about. You are certainly not going to find a reverb tank and importing one is probably way too expensive...

I do have a big collection of vintage effects from the old days though...but I have kind of sworn off them. The echo is more of the shadows influence I think...not just a surfer boy!

...

As for the photo...I went out for a jam and took the pic after a late night in the hallway after bring it back with the camera phone...so not so much amber fluid, but a late night jamming at volume!

...

I knew a guy who made a reverb tank in the seventies by wiring about 5 of them together...now that was a deep splashy reverb...hahaha

I actually think the Hot Rod's not at all bad...certainly better than any modeled reverb and such. I actually prefer the tape like delay that an analogue gives you over a lot of reverb...just seems a bit more defined...but for legit surfing, I guess you need the real deal!

I especially need to watch the money and the space...lugging a showman up some back stairs to a rehearsal or something (as I did with this setup when I last "sat in") could be a bit of a chore. Plus, you want to be wary if you are going to need a few trips from the car as thieves are everywhere!
