Cool pictures! Looks like Mel has personalized the Hallmark he bought at the Guitar Geek Festival.

those guys are GREAT !!!!!!

Apparently not so "great" live...at least not since Johnny Bartlett left the band.

you are wrong my friend, you could see Johnny join with the PS in the last european tour,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkBVNutXlRQ

you just have to live in Europe to see that lineup Laughing

I prefer the band with Johnny too, but with Russel they are still GREAT, because they are the funniest surf band ever !!

I have seen the Phantom Surfers around 6 or 7 times over the past 10 years.
and they continue to get worse and worse.

I love the early cds and 45s.
but live is a complete mess.

Thee Cormans are sloppy too, but way more fun.

or do you mean, you want a review of what I thought about Surf Side IV?
Shocked

You already told us at the Doll Hut! "Eh, about a six-and-a-half...needs more reverb." Haha

nevermind.

I saw them in their last european tour with Johnny Bartlett. They offered a tremendous show with a smart repertoire at the Surforama Weekend in Madrid.

I must admit that I love their first LPs, I think they´re loaded with brilliant compositions, especially the _Exciting Sound Of Model Road Racing _album.

I always have a tendency to go easy on reviews, unless something is really awful. Well, I would have to say that the Phantom Surfers set last weekend was not really awful but pretty close to it. Their set was disorganized, chaotic and too short.

Too short? Am I saying I wanted more of that messed up stuff? Well, yes, of course! I thought that if they had played longer they might have been able to get it together as they did have flashes of brilliance, albeit very brief, during their set. But you know, on the other hand, that's kind of what you get sometimes when you've got the whole garage-surf-trash thing going on, which was what this gig was all about.

Mel's guitar was turned down way too low and he wouldn't or didn't turn it up. Russell Quan was all over the place, but that's kind of par for the course for him and was to be expected. I do admit that they were pretty funny, a lot of their banter is pretty classic. I would definitely give them another chance and see them again.

You have to also understand that the show was running quite late as they started the whole thing later than scheduled because of the lack of an early crowd. There were a lot of bands on the bill so it was quite the undertaking for Jorge and you've got to appreciate his effort. Just to give you an idea, the Phantom Surfers finished their set at 2:00 AM and Thee Cormans still had to play to close out the night.

Anyway, I had fun and will be back for next year's blow out, if there is one!!

This has nothing to do with the PS show, but I don't understand why promoters start a show late if there is no crowd at the open. Maybe the "crowd" just doesn't want to see the opening acts, and maybe the crowd who paid $ to see the PSs doesn't want to stay up til 2AM. When you delay a show, you screw everybody- bands, and fans.
