Permalink North SF Bay Drummer Looking For Band

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Are there any Bay Area surf bands looking for a drummer? I haven't played in a surf band in a few years; only a couple of old man bands, but I'm ready to crank up the tempo a bit.

I played on the three Voodoo Court CD's, and all the compilations, except for the song "Always Something There To Remind Me" from the Om Om Burt Bacharach tribute.

I don't mind practice, although in my case, it never makes perfect.

Thanks

Bill Feller

Hey Bill,
welcome to sg101.

good luck in finding a band.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Bill, you should try to hook up with Joe Koch - NorCalHodad in Sonoma. Or FritzCat also in Sonoma.

Are you guys out there?

Yeah, Joe's Closeouts stuff is great. I'd like to hear more.

Thanks for the nods Jon and Danny. Can't say that I'm seeking a band at this time though, which is too bad for me because it sounds like Bill has some great experience. I've heard of Voodoo Court (from Santa Rosa?) but I was living out of state when they/you were active.

Thanks all for the reply's and Jeff, I'll see you at the Utah.

Joe, I understand about not seeking a band at this time, as I tend to go for years between bands, but since you come from Sonoma, don't you realize that you are missing out on being able to write a surf rock opera about the Bear Flag Rebellion? Think of it, nothing but reverb and jungle drums telling the story of how Californians revolted against a guy living next to a cheese factory.

I don't know if that would work too well because I've seen the re-enactment of the Bear Flag Revolt. It goes something like this...

Californio: Drop your weapons and surrender your land.

Gen. Vallejo: Okay.

All they have to eat here is foie gras drizzled with white truffle oil served on a bed of wilted arugula, so perhaps I'm feeling a bit too lazy and sluggish, or gouty, to consider a joining a band. However, my Shaman, who is actually a Higher part of my own Self, has just suggested an Acorn Nut cleanse.

norcalhodad, I have no idea what most of the above means, but I recommend eating some meat and starting a damn band! Your stuff is WAY WAY too good to just exist as your 1-man-band demos. You write really great songs. Go out there and spread the gospel of surf! Your Shaman will be pleased, I'm sure.

Brian and Ivan, thanks. My previous post had a very regional (Sonoma County) flair to it. I don't think the dude in Cotati will need a cryptologist to decipher it though.

I was pretty focused when I did those demos in '05, then went back to school the following year. I'm still enrolled and keep busy with school related projects, as well as family duties and a day job. My surf chops are mutton-y, my gear is a wreck...Maybe Danny can give me some time travel tips for recapturing some of that same nutty enthusiasm I had 4 years ago..but with my current schedule it would take some very good timing to slide into a band position.

I'm willing to play backup, assuming you can stand my feeble beginner's guitar fumblings.

The Bear Flag Rebellion was just like Joe said. When danger reared its ugly head, General Vallejo bravely turned his tail and fled. As a consequence, California has a bear on its flag, and Joe, Fritz, and I live in a place desperately in need of some new tunes. Let’s go for it. I’m so rusty the volume of oil spilled by the Exxon Valdez might just be enough to loosen me up.

P.S. There are still places around here to get a good steak, a good beer, and great pizza.

Is there one place where you can get all three?

'Cause that would be pretty awesome.

Trader Joes is a great store. The best pizza around here is Old Chicago Pizza in Petaluma, next to the Mystic Theater, where several surf bands have played.

The building occupied by Old Chicago Pizza was a saloon and brothel around the early 20th century. If you walk down the hall between the restaurant and the bathroom, the doors along the hall were the private rooms for the brothel.

The empty lot between Old Chicago and the Mystic is where the police car pulling out in American Graffiti had its engine ripped out by a chain.

It all comes together. A store with Joe in the name, a movie that has had a surf tribute album made about it (with a real silly version of “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” by Voodoo Court), a club housing surf shows, pizza, and brothels, all on land once owned by General Vallejo.

Hey, we have one of those here! I'll be right back...

I'd be stoked to help write and play some tunes about the sovereign nation of california. In addition I have always wanted to write something about emperor norton. History is always poised to be rewritten!
