Being totally new to this amp, which I don't have one yet until I sell my monster Peavey amp. I'm looking on craigslist in all areas in New Jersey and just checking out the twin reverbs that people have for sale.
There's quite a few and I'm running into the 65 RI black face and the silver face which don't have a date. I see alot of TR from the 70's too.
Is there a big difference between the 2? Vintage would be great, if I can afford one.
Any insight to this would be helpful, so when it's time to purchase one, I'll sound smart and know exactly what I'm looking for. The surf sound!!!

Most agree that the earlier Silver Faces are better than the Master Volume later models.
Silver Faces are easier to repair and a good value, you can probably find one for the same price or less than a Reissue. Silver Faces will appreciate in value, a Reissue will not, at least not for a long, long time and that depends on if they last that long. Time will tell.
The Reissues sound pretty good but they are not hand wired, are overpriced, and would be more difficult to repair should it become necessary, the heat is not good for the circuit board. I once spent $120 dollars to repair one solder joint on a well-used Fender circuit board.
For what it's worth, I bought a Super Reverb Reissue and discovered these issues afterwards. Later I bought a Silver Face Bassman for considerably less money and would like to sell the reissue now but I probably couldn't get what I paid for it.

I'm seeing some early to late 70's silverface twin reverbs on ebay and craigslist.
Are they okay for that surf sound?

I would say YES without hesitation, especially if you add a tank in front of it. But then, I'm not very picky about my amps as long as they are in the ballpark. From what others on this forum have said, I would go for the earliest Silver Face you can find and make sure it has not been modded. If the Fender logo has a tail it is one of the earlier models.

I love the SF Twins, but have found they are a bit too loud for most venues. I LOVE to play loud, but I have since gone to a SF Pro Reverb most of the time. Still lots of headroom and nice reverb, but you can get it running hotter before you start melting the audience. These are still relatively inexpensive, and suitable for most gigging situations. I also have an early '70's Deluxe Reverb and a SF Vibrosonic Reverb (Basically a SF Twin with a 15" speaker) All of them are great amps for surf. Another favorite of mine is my '66 Ampeg Gemini II, if you aren't too hung up on Fender. Great reverb and tremolo on that one. The Twins are great, but very, very loud.
