I think a lot of dudes forget the differrence in tone between nickel and steel.

In the day, nickel was the standard. Nowadays steel is more prevalent because people want morre of a rock sound.

The main thing is - don't let anybody tell you what you should use. Experiment and find what works for you.

Except the 'true' rock sound is probably on nickel roundcore strings. Excepet who can tell with what passes as rock these days. So many effects in line these day.d

I agree. if you want a set of steel wound strings to make your pointy guitar happy go for it. IMO a less shrill sound makes more sense for most things I'm inclined to play. Surf can be bright but it shouldn't be shrill or painful to listen to.
