wow, im suprized shaun hasnt posted this...oh well, here goes.
last weekend, we went to the Goon Lagoon(owned by Dick Cicklet of the Concussions) and layed down some tracks for our upcoming debut album. we planned on recording 19 songs, with 14 to go on the album, but unfortunataly due to TWO of my guitar strings breaking, we had to cut the weekend short. we ended up laying down 8 songs, 4 of which were instrumentals(don't worry, the rest of the songs we have are intros, well only have 4 vocals on the album)and it turned out great! everything was recorded onto an old school analog tape deck. another really good thing is that i got to a vintage '63 reverb unit, which in case anyone that doesnt know is wondering...completely kicks the shit out of reissues(even with my cap + tube mod)
anyways, the album with be called "High Octane"-after one of our intros...and it will be mixed by Pete Curry from Los Straightjackets!!
anyways, we hope to go back in a few weeks to finish up all of our songs, we'll keep you posted.

Suprised doesn't have a z in it...
But yes, one of the songs that will be on the album is a cover of the song Surfari...
As of right now, it's looking like we'll have the album done by the end of january, unless something horrible happens...
Also, the Goon Lagoon really is an awesome studio to record at. It's got a whole lot of vintage guitars (Even an original Yamaha SGV 300 for those interested, and yes it does rock), vintage amps, and a great atmosphere. We'll have a ton of pictures up in the next week or so for those interested.

Josh! How were you not more prepared string wise! Even though I had not broken a string in a year and a half I still brought in 5 extras sets.

Also... Question about Pete mixing the album. Is this going to be a remote mixing, or will he be mixing with you in a studio? Be careful with remote mixing. It can take a lot longer, and therefore cost a lot more than you expected. They have to mix it, upload it, you have to be near a computer to download it. The whole process also can result in you not getting as good of mixes as you desire. I'm sure Pete does a great job, but you have to be the one happy with the mixes.

Excellent, fellas! It sounds like the recording will do your sound and your songs justice! Congratulations, and I really look forward to hearing the results. Good luck with finishing it up.

because these were my first set of La Bella flats, and i figured they'd last longer than 3 months, but i seemed to have forgotten that i tear through even the lower strings on a pack of flatwounds like a dog eating a rope of jerky that is being used for a game of tug of war(the tug of war metaphore is because it would give it tension...like a guitar string...arent i smart?). plus, they don't sound very good out of the package, so i wouldn't have been satisfied with recording on new strings anyways. i was going to bring extras, but with those circumstances, i didn't feel it that important, so i forgot on account as it wasnt too much on my mind.
actually one time i DID forget a condom to a brothel...but it was korean...not thai.

He'll be mixing us in his own studio, and he'll be sending us a cd of the mixes as far as I know.

High Octane isn't really melodically interesting, sounds like one of DD's throwaway filler tunes. The confused sounding drum rolls take away from the inertia of the tune, but I suppose they are "authentic" haha. But starting at 1:20...eeesh...I don't know if I'd release that take.
Surfari has what sounds like a lot of guitar flubs in it. At 0:20 and 1:02, those are the two most glaring ones. Do you have a better take you could use?
Doheney Bloodbath is a lot more interesting melodically and it seems like everyone's playing is a lot more happening on this one but it still feels a good 30-40 seconds too long due to lack of thematic development. If you're gonna repeat the melody, vary the phrasing or move to a different octave, otherwise that tune should have ended at 2:30.
Blond In The XKE works pretty well and the vocals sound confident, but I would have mixed them lower because it sounds like the band is playing 50ft away from the singer. When the guitar solo comes in it is still way below the level of the vocals, I would have raised it to a comparable level and kept it at approximately the same level as the solo is in your unmastered version for the duration of the song to keep it from sounding like karaoke.
The guitar sound overall is ok but I feel like it could have been a little more intense considering you guys are a 3-piece and there's a whole lot of vacant frequency range to occupy. Same goes for the bass, which sounds kinda puny to me. I can't hang with the drum sound at all though. I hate to say it but I think the live recording you have up there makes the studio tracks sound a little wimpy, not just in terms of sound but in terms of performance.
Hope you take that constructively, every recording is a learning experience and no matter how happy you are with the results, by the time you get around to doing the next one there will be a million things you will want to do differently.
thanks for the honest input, zak. damn though, i didnt think anyone would notice the flubs...at least not this soon ha. however we aren't aiming for a 100% flawless record, and i am in no way trying to win an award for the most melodic surf band, were not the madiera, and were fine with. as cool as melodic surf can be, thats not the style were going for. we also kinda wanted to keep with the spirit of being a bit trad, and most trad records have a bunch of mistakes...im reasonably satisfied with the sound of these songs...they arent perfect, and nothing i record ever will be, as i become way too tense when i get a microphone in front of my amplifier...slowing the songs down a bit would help though, we recorded them way faster than we usually play them...
