I'll be remembering 2008 for the Surf Coasters Outside Break Tour. All those photographs, youtubes and live recordings really brought the fun of the show to my screen thousands of miles away. Ferenc giving it large as always - thanks so much -

Klas
Hey, I did say it has been a "good" year for surf music!

And I definitely would like surf music to become more popular by expanding further among fans of related genres.

What makes me worried these days is that sometimes it appears as the focus for surf music has changed from who can drink the most beer to who can play the most scales...

Klas, If you think all the music cited in the above posts are mere exercises in technical ability, then that really says more about you then it does about surf music. Thumbs Down

Ah yes... I remember why I started listening to surf rock, to see who could drink the most beer... Tongue in cheek I hope? Although if you think surf is becoming too technical I must disagree. I'm definitely somebody who wants to see surf evolve from its original form a little more. But that never has to mean that never has to mean more technical, unless one would consider surf to be 'remedial', which I would never say.

Also, maybe if the Surfites played some gigs then a future gig could become a great year instead of a good year. Plus I'm sure some successful gigs would result in an amazing year for you guys.

Klas, another of your countrymen has proven that the best way to learn all the scales is to drink lots and lots of beer - that would be the incomparable Yngwie Malmsteen! So, if you keep concentrating on your beer-drinking you too will soon be playing harmonic minor and phrygian arpeggios at lightning speed! Beware, I warned you!

Oh man, I then have to consider stop drinking beer!

Maybe you could start a poll? I'm pretty sure your first option would win with a vast margin though.

otoh, once we would have time travel, Im pretty darn sure 95 % of the people in 1963 would get their ass into 21st century with all its conveniences pronto. You'd be "living it" on a rather empty beach....

What's funny about this is that I'm in the middle of doing an in-depth interview for the next Continental zine with Mike Barbwire of Sweden's Barbwires, friends of Klas', and just received the first batch of answers form him. Mike exhibits the pretty much exact opposite attitude about creating music to "who can drink the most beer". This guy is METICULOUS and super-thoughtful about everything he does, to the point of obsessiveness, a kind of a modern Brian-Wilson-type. Klas, if you're worried about the loss of focus on beer-drinking in modern surf music, maybe you should do something about it starting with your friends! Twisted Evil

BTW, this is going to be a KICK-ASS interview!!! Just wait till you all see it... Mike is a truly fascinating and talented dude.

Wannes, I think you're exactly right!

When it happens, do you think we could ask them to bring all those brownface Showmans and Bandmasters, Strats, JMs and Jags with them? Or is it a Terminator-type-deal - just the naked body? I hope not!! Razz

Wow, really looking forward to this! I'm loving Sea Rider and would love to hear about Mike's thought process in recording that album.

Anyway, I think we all can agree that the year at least hasn't been bad for the genre and probably the best in quite a few years time. It would be interesting to see what people think about 2009 when it has ended and ideally a poll will then have a couple of more options to choose from.
