Permalink KAY "Kleenex Box" Pickups - Too Dark for Surf?

New Topic

Anybody use these pickups for surf music? Single coil but I understand they may be too hot for surf?

Just curious, I've always liked the look of these pickups.

Thanks,
Bob

They may not be the best choice for surf. Cool pickups though. My buddy had a swingmaster with two of these. I later got an archtop with 1 of them. They fall into one of my favorite pickup categories, the "almost-but-not-quite" P-90 bag. The kleenex tops have a smooth P-90 type sound, maybe a bit darker than the best P90s I've heard because the Kays tended to be overwound.

This is just my personal taste ... the best "sorta P-90s" I know of are the Dearmond 2K pickups that came stock only in korean made Dearmond imports. My M75T has these. Along with a rather stiff but highly abusable Bigsby, that guitar really is surf capable. The 2ks look exactly like Gretsch Dynansonics, but don't sound like them. Rootsier, can really punch at higher volumes.

That seems like a fair price and those leads are nice and long. Go for it!
