A few months ago I found a ME-33 (very similar to the ME-50) on CL for cheap. It doesn't do anything truly "surfy". I got this thing primarily for the delay effects options but have had hours of fun playing around with its other endless options (guitar/amp simulation, chorus, distortion etc). There are some really wacky things you can do with it too such as pitch changing and duplicating a note at any pitch interval (great for a Purple Haze solo, but totally not surfy). Mostly I avoid the presets and just set it to manual. Once in manual mode each of the basic effects type can be set using the knobs to a preferred parameter such as faster/slower delay with more/less feedback etc. then you can combine each of (up to 5) effects to on or off using the five little pedals. The "expression" pedal on mine has limited use as there is not a lot of motion to effect ratio. I suppose there is probably a way to adjust this but I have not tried that yet.
Rich reverb and tremolo I get from my amp and/or tank which obviously sound better from the tubed environment.

I don't own one but I might make a move in that direction, I really like the concept. Most multi-effects units are not as straightforward as the ME-50 which is set up like a pedalboard with a lot of options that can be pre-set. While I'm hardly a big-time pedal guy the ME-50 makes a lot of sense to me as a way of having a little of everything available without having to have a huge pedal board.
For Surf music you don't really need much but the reverb might be enough to boost the built-in reverb on your amp to new heights of surfishness. You might be able to fine tune things a bit with the tone presets and perhaps even some judicious use of the compressor, the best feature of the ME-50 IMO. For the sound of early Surf music you might try a hint of the Natural overdrive preset just to thicken the sound slightly.
