Another one for the drummers:

He has a book out. Haven't seen it yet. Given his career it is probably mostly Turtles and post-Turtles, of course.

Thanks! Check the video at the bottom of the page with the Turtles doing "Elenore". For once, it is not a lip synch and JB is great on the drums!

You're welcome! Thanks for pointing out Elenore!

I'll point out an interesting Sentinals remark Barbata makes at the general web site:

I was in a Band called The Sentinals and we had a #1 West Coast hit called "La Tinia".

The song is usually rendered Latinia "in the literature," though with enye (n-tilde) for n, which always strikes me as odd. This is almost always further revised to Latin'ia, but I think that's a digital music database "ASCII" convention for enye that's gotten out of hand. I actually encountered that version first, and it left me wondering what a Latin 'Ia was. Some kind of Latin take on an 'ia? But then what was an 'ia? Ah well.

Anyway, I'd have expected either Latina (with enye) or Latinia, not both, and even so neither half-way variant strikes me as a standard Spanish word. But Latina without enye would be, of course, the feminine variant of the adjective (or variable noun) latina/latino, maybe Cancion Latina 'Latin (Spanish) Song'. However, presenting it as La Tinia makes me wonder if everybody has always missed the point. Not that I know what a tinia is, of course. So I'm still clueless. (Yeah, I know, people tell me that all the time.)

I'm nerving myself up to ask about Tor-Chula, folks.

Well, Tinia is a woman's name, origin unknown to me, and also the name of the Etruscan sky god (not goddess) equivalent to Jupiter or Zeus.

Tinea (sometimes misspelled Tinia) is the fungus that causes ringworm, athlete's foot and jock itch.

Unless the last are traditional ailments of surfers, I assume the first possibility is the most likely.

Barbata was respected outside of rock and roll cirles too. I remember reading back in the 1960s that he toured, or at least played some live gigs with drum monster Buddy Rich - and it was Rich's idea.

Tuck...you're killing me with these great drum links....I've met JB a few times in my career. They're cool stories and i'll share them when i get from the beach........

When i was a kid our family lived in a little beach town called Shell Beach which was South of San Luis Obispo and just north of Pismo Beach. I used to go to the Rose Garden Ballroom in
Pismo and see all the surf bands as well as rock and roll bands and anything else i could.....The Sentinals from SLO used to play there quite a bit and the "house" band was The Impacts. I fell in love with music during those early years and those musicians were very inspiring. We surfed during the day and when it got all blown out in the afternoon we'd go hang out in another little beach town called Avila just up the road. We we're hanging out there one day when The Sentinals came walking up to the beach for a photo shoot. I went up to Johny Barbata and told him i wanted to be a drummer too and that i thought he was great. I don't recall what, if anything, he said to me but i've never forgotten that moment. Next time i saw him was on the set of a TV show called 'Where The Action Is' with The Turtles in San Francisco in the late 60's and when i got close to him i mentioned meeting him in Avila and he smiled and nodded to me. I saw him again in the early 70's in Mendocino California....i was playing a gig at a small restaurant with the band i was with at the time when he and Graham Nash (from The Hollies) and Gene Clark (from The Byrds) pulled up in a limo and got out and came in the restaurant during our sound check....they (the restaurant) weren't open yet so they hung out and listened to us play....i was REALLY nervous to play in front of Johny Barbata but it went OK and we all went out back and smoked a joint and i remember talking to Johny about that day in Avila and The Sentinals and The Turtles and he told me he was playing with The Jefferson Starship!! They hung around and had dinner and listened to us play and we talked story on our first break and then they were gone. I heard not long after that that he was in an auto accident and got hurt pretty bad and i haven't seen or heard of him since!! For the record, sitting that close to Gene Clark was something....i always liked his voice and he was a big "star" then...and Graham Nash i had seen at The Rose Garden with The Hollies and they were fantastic...they opened and closed with "Look Through Any Window" which was a big hit at the time. It was pretty neat sitting with those guys and they enjoyed hanging out with us too. Don't get me started on my Jimi Hendrix stories!!
Back to the beach.....
