Jeez, I feel sorry for all you suffering domestically for your art. Unless coerced with a shotgun, why marry one who dislikes the music a spouse plays or the instruments used to play it? Ditch that baggage, I say. There are billions more where those significant others came from. You gotta have your priorities straight, after all!

So, a couple of years ago I got a dog who, as it turns out, really does enjoy surf music!...ask mom-surfing and eddiekatcher. When I crank up a guitar or bass, he grabs one of his squeaky toys and plays along with me.
I can't quite match that but I did have a Beagle that loved Jazz. If I put some Paul Desmond or Jim Hall on the stereo he'd come into the room and lie down between the speakers.

I will say that being single for the past several years has also allowed me to acquire some really cool gear that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to. Being single is way better than being married to the wrong woman. And a lot less expensive!
I'm in the same situation. Single wasn't my first choice but the upside becaomes more obvious with every passing year.

I remember having to sneak my first Strat into the house back in the mid-'70's, and keeping it hidden for over a year due to fear of spousal wrath and reprisal. When I did finally get it out of the case and play it, I was able to say, truthfully, "Oh, I've had this one a long time!"
Been there, it can be a drag.

My wife reluctently puts up with surf music. The two things she really hates are my 50 watt practice amp (I can't turn it down enough) and my Jazzmaster.
It worked out well, when I won the eBay auction for my Squier Strat she wanted to know why I needed another guitar. I plugged it in and said "Listen, no twang."
Now I just gotta find myself a good 5 or 10 watt practice amp to bring home.

After supper my son and I can hang in the "music room" and rock away at good volume. Obvioiusly once the kids are in bed at 8:30 it's strictly headphones, but I was hacking around the other day and my wife told me the lick I made up sounded good. Think I could remember it now?
Relationships are organic and nothing is carved in stone. Who knows, maybe one day I'll come home from work and she'll be playing Secret Agent Man.....whoops sorry folks dozed off there for a second. But I had the most awesome dream...

Biggest mistake I made was buying the new Los Straitjackets Live DVD. When she saw the Luche Libre masks and the cheesy choreography, her contempt for surf music reached a new high (low?).
That describes my reaction to a T.
Maybe your wife has taste?
Perhaps it isn't surf music your wife hates, but the cheesy tacky castrated elements of the genre?
Heathen.

thats what Ive been thinking for four pages.
besides, i wouldnt want to live my life with someone who tags along with everything i do. symbiosis sounds like prison to me. its the differences between us that make my life richer. we have a bunch of commom interests, but im glad for the ones we dont share.
i took her to dick dale though and she liked it, and is very supportive about my music. as far as gear is concerned, we have an implicit agrement. she doesnt mention my gear acquisition syndrome, i dont mention her shoe acquisition syndrome

My wife and I are on the same page on most things, which for us is great. Has been working well for the past 7 years. There are a few things that we differ on, and that is good.

Yeah, my wife is all accessories syndrome. Shoes, Purses, Belts, and Jackets.
But I'm all for it, since I can buy what I want too. I agree it is nice to be into things, but there is a limit. Space is needed and healthy or you start to grind on each other. Thats when the beatings start...... (joking of course)

I've lived with my girlfriend for 27 years and I knew her many years before that. We share a lot of common interests, including musical. Just because I've become obsessed with surf music in the last 10 years I'm not about to leave because she doesn't want to hear Baja yet again. You have to make some compromises in life unless you want to live alone. It may be different for those who are making music their life, but there is more to life than music (so I've heard). We can't all be Ferenc, Danny or Outside's husband. Please say Mel's wife hates surf music.

I wouldn't say she hates it, tolerates is probably the word. Feel better?

Yes, thank you. Actually, I like my arrangement. I can go to shows (BTD laughs here) alone and leave when I want, have as many beers as I want, flirt with all those fabulous women.

I'm single but if it makes anybody feel better my cat usually leaves the room as soon as I turn on an amp. When I carry a guitar into the living room he watches and if he hears the switch on the amp click it's "Reeeaarrrr!" and he bolts outta the room. OTOH, if I play my classical he dances ballet to it.
