I'm thinking about starting a support group for people whose signficant others don't like surf music. Does anyone else have this problem?
Biggest mistake I made was buying the new Los Straitjackets Live DVD. When she saw the Luche Libre masks and the cheesy choreography, her contempt for surf music reached a new high (low?). For my money, that opening sequence is 24 karat solid gold.
On another note, while driving my 8 year-old son to a birthday party with his friend on the weekend, his friend asked him, "What's your favorite band?" and my son replied, "Los Straitjackets". His friend replied, "I like Nine inch Nails" (NIN? Are you kidding me? did I mention he's eight?) Anyway it was a proud moment for this Pappa Surf.
She also REALLY tried to talk me out of buying my surfer-green guitar. "This surf thing you're into will pass and you'll be stuck with this green guitar!" Ya, I've liked surf music for like 25 years, it's probably just a phase...sheesh.
The lines are open. Tell Pappa_Surf your problems.

Man I feel your pain. What's worse is, my wife doesn't like ANY music I listen to, except for some 80s stuff.
Thankfully my daughters (nine and six years old) like surf music.

I got lucky, my wife enjoys surf music. Not to the extent that I do, but she is always down to spin a surf CD in the car.

Not only have I made my girlfriend tired of surf music, but she always liked the sound of my friend's Les Paul better than my Fenders and encouraged me to buy an "nice" guitar like that. I guess that in itself isn't such a bad thing but I still don't own a Gibson. Luckily we have enough common ground and since I didn't become obsessed with surf music until many years into the relationship I can't expect her to share my enthusiasm.

Wow, mine simply doesn't get any of the gearhound in me regardless of quests. I've tried in vain to associate it to matching outfits and belts and shoes and all of that.
She is so sick of gear quests by me that she just literally says whatever.......
One day when we were driving to my inlaws in Westport, CT (about 6 hours away.) I decided to bring an array of bands to see if she dug anything and she came to the conclusion for Surf, she said "it all sounds the same."
SInce I was driving, I restrained myself and I immediately held back and said nothing but thought about striking he fore and back-handed about the face and neck repeatedly without mercy for what seemed like hours in my head.
Before I knew it we were in Connecticut and I had some wine and it was all over. Thanks for listening, my name is Diggey and I have a problem.......... HA HA

OK, Zak I knew you were out there in the weeds with a comment like that. I too am sometimes conflicted about the whole wrestling mask thing, but stumbling across them on the internet brought me back to surf as the staple in my musical diet. I have to give them credit for that and I don't think it hurts surf that they appeal to a wider audience. Take Rock en Espanole for example. They dish up some really nice classic rock tracks in a unique way then you find Whittier Blvd sitting there all by itself. It's catchy and commercial and the non-surf indoctrined like it.
Coming around full circle to the theme of this thread, the unwashed masses (like my wife) are like frightened bunnies. You can't walk up to them and whack them on the head with 2 hours of tremolo picking, you gotta earn their trust with some palatable music, then throw in a Whittier Blvd. now and then.

I try to buy all my guitars white so my wife can never tell I've snuck another one in the house. But she does tolerate my insanity. Unlike one of my best buds around these parts who neatly piles his guitars in cases from the floor to the ceiling, I dig 'em and want to see 'em in real time.
For instance: I currently have a Strat (that's right Dr. P) and a P bass on stands next to my bed greeting me first thing every morning. When I left the house this morning, there were three Jazzmasters leaning against the sofa and one Hallmark on a stand on the hearth in the family room. There is a pile of guitars in bags leaning in the corner of the dining room. My wife's not a big surf music fan, but she's learned to live with my acquisition problem................problem, what problem?

Perhaps it isn't surf music your wife hates, but the cheesy tacky castrated elements of the genre?

Eddie, that is a great plan.... all one color........ That could be genius in a really "Dr. Evil like way.......
And Matt ;
Westport is very extremely wealthy, and my Brother in-law and Sister in-law have an awesome New England style mansion, both master degreed to the hilt..... have a house also at the Cape and a live in nanny and all of the trimmings...........
BUT, they get home every night at 8pm. See the kids on the weekends and spend about 2 hours a night it the car in traffic.
Quality of life brother. I for one, love it there but could NEVER adjust. NEVER. They are the coolest too and take the success without the attitude. (Westport style nose in the air type.)
All that aside, I'm also fortunate my wife lets me pile my gear and "stuff" up.

i make an effort not to play guitar when my hubbie is present or leave surf cds in the car because one or two tunes for him is his saturation point. it's not that he doesn't like it but it's not a top listening choice.

Try marrying a Russian classically trained pianist.
It was an uphill battle until I introduced her to youtube and forced her to watch Meshugga Beach Party who covered many songs she already knew.
Hell, she even cracked a bit of a smile when I wasn't looking but she's still an anti-gear acquisition type of wife.

My wife encourages me to spend money on gear. She knows that it is what I love, my only real hobby. I think she just wants me to buy stuff so that she does not feel so bad about spending all of our money on clothing.
Diggey, I work at a high end kitchen company, catering to the rich and wealthy. I have to deal with those types all the time. However, most of the time they are not down to earth. They are demanding, snotty and down right rude most of the time.
Anyway.

Thats funny. I jsut got a Meshugga Package trade from MR. Snyder and they are awesome. I'd love to see them live. Several beverages and I'd have a ball.
One more thing Matt, I know exactly where Danbury is. I have an office in South Windsor and go there alot and used to live outside Hartford.
Are there bands around you? JUst curious. I always look and try and find some.

Not any bands that I know of locally. There are some CT surf bands though. We build wood countertops - Hardwoods exclusively, we use American Hardwoods and some exotics.
Gotta hold on to a woman like that, eh?
